Indicator: many all-star games = lonely star?

All-star game really doesnt mean much in terms of achievments, but it is an indicator for above-average player?
I mean when someone plays for "no-star" team and he is arguably the best player on that team, he plays in many all star games (e.g. Rick Nash, Peter Bondra).

True or false?

Please dont argue with exceptions like Gretzky, Lemieux etc. I wrote "above-average player" or something like not elite star.

The criteria for all-star games have changed over time, so it would depend when they made the teams.

It was only recently that they made a rule about every team needing to be represented. I think it was the season the Minnesota Wild and the Colmbus Blue Jackets joined the league. But maybe it was the next year when the Atlanta Thrashers joined.

During the O6, all-star teams were selected to play against the previous Stanley Cup Champions. That meant that even 4th liners and back-up goalies from Cup teams were all-stars.

As long as the player is being selected on merit, and not just because he was on the cup winner, then yeah, it's an indication of greatness.

Doug Mohns played in 7 all-star games IIRC, but was never a postseason all-star. That, to me, shows he was often just a cut below the elite.

if they were constantly being recognized as one of the better players in the game, then they weren't "underrated".

they're just "potentially underrated" if you look only at awards and postseason all-stars.

I'm not stretching the argument that far. Just saying, it's something to look at when talking about underrated players.

I'd say Doug Mohns is pretty underrated considering 99% of sports fans probably couldn't identify him as a hockey player.
