Kris Baker @SabresProspects - Wednesday, April 29 -
How about Nicholas Baptiste last night? Four big goals (career high) including the GWG to lead Erie to a 7-5 win over SSM. First Playoff Hat Trick.

Prospects Recap - Wednesday, April 29 - Baptiste Blows Up! - Four Goals In Otters Win! - KrisBaker@SabresProspects - SabresProspects.com

Nicholas Baptiste exploded for four goals Tuesday as Erie defeated Sault Ste. Marie 7-5 in Game #4 of the OHL Western Conference Final.
Jean Dupuy scored the game's first goal just 38 seconds after the opening face-off with Justin Bailey getting one of the assists.
Nicholas Baptiste quickly answered with his sixth of the playoffs 1:57 later to open the floodgates.
Dupuy's goal came as he hit the net front and kicked a rebound to his backhand for a nice finish.
Baptiste struck from the left wing after taking a keen cross-ice feed right on the tape from Connor McDavid ('15).

Baptiste potted his second power-play tally of the night at 11:24 of the second period to again knot the score at 3-3.
Dylan Strome ('15) and McDavid picked up helpers on the play.
The teams traded goals to start the third period and Erie eventually eventually got their first lead of the night with an Alex Debrincat ('16) marker.
Baptiste would complete the hat trick less than a minute later with the eventual game-winning goal.
Sergey Tolchinsky (CAR) got one back for the Soo with 1:56 to play.
Baptiste would keep the engine firing with an empty-netter with 38 seconds left to earn his career-high fourth goal of the game.
Erie leads the series 3-1 with the teams heading back to Sault Ste. Marie for Game #5 on Thursday.

@ErieOtters - And they’re off! Game #5 is underway! #onegoal

LaxSabre - GOAL OTTERS!!! Nicholas Baptiste gives the Otters a 1-0 lead - 2:06 into the first period.
10th goal of the post-season and 5th goal in the last two games played.
Otters take advantage of a icing that wasn't call.
@ErieOtters - GOOOOOOAL! 2:06 in and @NickBaptiste picks up where he left off from last game! 1-0 #Otters! #onegoal

LaxSabre - looks like Nicholas Baptiste goal was unassisted. Justin Bailey with a scoring chance - stick save by Devin Williams.

@OHLHoundPower - McCann drills one home - with help from DeAngelo and Tolchinsky! - time of the PPG - 12:09. Game tied at 1.

LaxSabre - Travis McDermott gets called for a high-stick on Justin Bailey - goes to the box for two minutes.
Bailey drew the earlier penalty too - which was an interference call on Kyle Maksimovich - that led to the tieing goal.
Bailey now on the Greyhound PP and he just misses the net. Erie kills the Sault Ste. Marie PP.
Devin Williams with a save at the buzzer - via a SSM PP - they will be on the PP for the first 1:55 of the second period.
End First Period - Erie 1 (Baptiste) Sault St. Marie 1 (McCann) - Shots On Goal - Sault Ste. Marie 13-8.

Otters killed the 1:55 SSM power-play which started the second period.

Sorry for the lack of updates - got a phone call that took up basically all of the second period.
Dad said it was basically all Sault Ste. Marie in the period and Erie was lucky to still be tied at 1-1 heading into the third period.
Shots On Goal - Second Period - Sault Ste. Marie 15-5 - Game - Sault Ste. Marie 28-13.

LaxSabre - Well we saw or heard that one coming - Sault Ste. Marie takes the lead here in the third period on a goal by Michael Bunting.
@OHLHoundPower - The Hounds play some tic-tac-toe and Bunting finds the net behind Williams! Assist to Tolchinsky! - Time of the goal - 3:36.

LaxSabre - GOAL!!!! OTTERS!!! Travis Dermott with the tieing goal - off a 2 on 1 with Connor McDavid - its 2-2! Goal scored at 5:13 of the third period.
Unfortunately Alex Debrincat came up injuried on the play - went to the locker room right away with the Otters trainer right behind him.
@ErieOtters - GOOOOAL!!! @cmcdavid97 to @Travis_Dermott on a 2 on 1 and we’re tied again! 14:47 to go!

Good News - Alex Debrincat is back on the bench. 11 minutes remaining in the third period. Williams comes up huge on Ritchie.
Debrincat comes into the game a couple of minutes later - serves a two minute bench minor for too many men - comes out of box and almost gives the Otters the lead.

Ugh, Greyhounds take the lead - 3-2 - Murphy pass intercepted - leads to a break and goal scored by Moore - assist from Dupuy.
@OHLHoundPower - Moore has the crowd going wild! The pass came from Dupuy and he goes top shelf! Time of the goal - 12:55. Hounds lead 3-2!

Erie had some chances with the extra attacker - even had a power-play (thus a two-man advantage) - but couldn't score.
Sault Ste. Marie scores an empty-netter to clinch it - Guertler with the goal.
Final - Sault Ste. Marie 4 Erie 2 - Otters now lead the series 3-2 - Game #6 - Saturday, May 2 - in Erie - 7:00 pm ET.
Final Shots On Goal - Third Period - Erie 15-10 - Game - Sault Ste. Marie 38-28.

@kevinoDandC -
The #Sabres have fired #Amerks coach Chadd Cassidy.
The common belief at season's end was that #Sabres general manager Tim Murray would not keep Chadd Cassidy as #Amerks coach.
Tim Murray didn't hire Chadd Cassidy (Darcy Regier did). This is now fully GMTM's organization; he'll put his people in place.
Oddly, the #Sabres/#Amerks organization says general manager Tim Murray will not be available to discuss his firing of Chadd Cassidy.

@RSandersonWHTK -
Chadd Cassidy is no longer the head coach of the Rochester #Amerks. His contract was set to expire this summer.
GMTM - "With the organization as a whole continuing to move forward into a new chapter, we have decided to make a change at that position."

Jean Dupuy picked up an assist on the game winning goal for the Greyhounds, giving him a total of five (4G+1A) points in nine postseason appearances.
Justin Bailey logged no points (had a minus-two rating) leaving him with one point and one assist in his last four games versus the Otters.

Game Recap - OHL Western Conference Finals - Game #6 - Best In The West - Erie Otters Win Wayne Gretzky Trophy! -
OntarioHockeyLeague.com - Saturday, May 2.

The Erie Otters are the Western Conference Champions/Wayne Gretzky Trophy Holders for the first time since 2002 as Connor McDavid led the way with a goal and four assists and OHL Rookie of the Year Alex DeBrincat buried a hat-trick in a 7-3 win over the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds on Saturday.

The Game #6 victory saw McDavid net the winner 10:19 into the second period on a powerplay wraparound to give the Otters a 4-2 edge and they never looked back, advancing to the OHL Championship Series to face the winner of an Eastern Conference Final series between Oshawa Generals and North Bay Battalion. (LaxSabre - Oshawa leads the series 3-2 and can be the Eastern Conference Champions/Bobby Orr Trophy Holders with a win this afternoon in North Bay.)

The atmosphere inside Erie Insurance Arena was electric from the drop of the puck as fans across Canada tuned in on Sportsnet (LaxSabre - and NHL Network in the United States) to see two of the OHL's best clubs clash in the sixth game of what's been a back and forth series. The Otters struck first on a well orchestrated play by defenceman Travis Dermott who find Nick Betz in the slot from the half boards to open the scoring 2:49 into the first.

The Greyhounds responded before the midway point of the first when Michael Bunting and Jared McCann doubled up on goals under three minutes apart to give the Hounds a 2-1 edge. Jake Marchment sent the game to the second intermission knotted at two with a goal off the rush at 10:12 with assists going to Remi Elie and Travis Dermott.

The turning point of the game saw the Otters cashed in on a five minute power-play with Connor McDavid playing a key role in a pair of goals to put Erie out in front 4-2. First, McDavid curled around the back of the net to find Alex DeBrincat who beat Greyhounds goalie Brandon Halverson over the shoulder with a quick shot at 8:46. A shift later, McDavid did it himself, evading a check down the boards to curl around the net and bank a shot in off a Sault Ste. Marie defender for his 19th of the playoffs.

Darnell Nurse drew the Hounds to within one to start the third, beating a screened Devin Williams through traffic with assists to Anthony DeAngelo and Jean Dupuy to narrow the Erie lead to 4-3.

Buffalo Sabres Prospect Nick Baptiste would provide the dagger for the Otters though, reinstating the two goal lead at 11:53 on the man advantage to make Erie 3-for-5 on the powerplay. McDavid gathered an assist along with Dylan Strome and would help orchestrate Erie's sixth goal of the night under three minutes later.

The Otters pulled off a nifty tic-tac-toe sequence on a three-on-one with 5:28 remaining in the third, with McDavid teaming up with Elie to find DeBrincat for the finish past a helpless Halverson. DeBrincat found the empty net to complete the hat-trick and score his eighth of the playoffs and start the party at Erie Insurance Arena as the Otters sealed the deal on a 7-3 win and 4-2 series victory.

Connor McDavid's sensational five point performance sees him increase his OHL playoff scoring lead to 19 goals, 23 assists and 42 points in 15 games while equaling Cory Pecker's franchise record of 42 points in a postseason set in 2002. He is now nine points shy of Justin Papineau's (1999) and Jason Dawe's (1993) OHL record of 51 playoff points.

Erie, Pennsylvania - The Otters claimed the Wayne Gretzky Trophy for the first time since 2002 Saturday night in game six with a 7-3 victory over the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. Alex DeBrincat notched a hat trick and Connor McDavid recorded five points in the win.

It took 2:49 for Nick Betz to break the ice, giving the Otters an early 1-0 lead. Michael Bunting tied the game minutes later, bringing the tally to 1-1 before, two and a half minutes later on the power play, Jared McCann gave the Greyhounds their only lead of the game. Jake Marchment didn’t need long to put the Otters back on the board, finding an opening behind Brandon Halverson and closing the first period with a tie.

The tie stood for nearly the first half of the second period, with Devin Williams making save after save. Remi Elie nearly put the Otters in the lead, but, despite the goal light and fan celebration, the review held the no-goal call. Williams was knocked over next to his net, causing a scrum to the side. Hayden Verbeek was handed a match penalty for slew footing, putting the Otters on a five-minute power play. DeBrincat notched his first of the night on the power play before, a minute and a half later, McDavid broke through the Greyhounds defense and put the Otters up 4-2, a lead they held into the third period after the Greyhounds killed a brief five on three.

With the Greyhounds on a power play of their own not even five minutes into the period, Darnell Nurse brought the Soo within one, making it 4-3. Penalties went back and forth, each team having huge chances to get their team back on the board. Just over halfway through the period, Nick Baptiste beat Halverson not even 30 seconds into the power play, giving the Otters a two-goal lead. It took not even three minutes for DeBrincat to notch his second, igniting an already booming crowd. Sault Ste. Marie called Halverson to the bench with over four minutes to go and DeBrincat finished his hat trick and solidified the win with an empty net goal.

McDavid set a new Otters record for points in a series with 19, breaking his own record of 14, set in the semi-final with London. DeBrincat’s hat trick was the fifth of the playoffs for the Otters, the other four being scored by McDavid (2), Marchment and Baptiste. The Iron Workers Local Union No. 3 Ironmen of the Game - First Star - Connor McDavid - 1 Goal - 4 Assists. Second Star - Alex DeBrincat - 3 Goals. Third Star - Travis Dermott - 3 Assists.

By Kris Baker - SabresProspects.com

20150420-Baptiste-INT.jpg

And then there was one.

After a week that began with four Buffalo Sabres prospects locked into playoff action, just one remains as Nicholas Baptiste (2013, third round) and the Erie Otters claimed the Wayne Gretzky Trophy as Ontario Hockey League Western Conference Champions on Saturday with a 7-3 triumph over the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in Game 6 of the best-of-seven series.

Baptiste scored a goal in the series clinching win, taking a Connor McDavid feed in the left face-off circle and releasing a quick wrist shot over the shoulder of Brandon Halverson (NYR) to give the Otters a 5-3 lead at 11:53 of the third period.

Through 15 games, Baptiste has collected 11 goals and 20 points. He’ll enter the OHL final series with a nine-game point streak.

The Otters will square off with the Oshawa General for the OHL Championship and right to represent the league at the 2015 Memorial Cup in Quebec City. The Generals advanced by virtue of a 4-2 series victory over North Bay. (The series schedule has not yet been announced.)

These playoffs have really boosted Baptiste in my eyes. Even in Sudbury last year he wasn't this good. He's really good.

I hope we keep he and Fasching. Speed,size, two way and possession play.
