Please forgive me if there is already another thread, I tried looking but didn't see anything.

Are there any early front runners for top prospects for the import draft this year? I know a lot of it hinges on the NHL draft as well but I thought maybe there were from early obvious front runners. If yes, any goalies? It's very hard to find any information on the imports.

it's hard to gauge imports i think because so many are able to play pro for money. it's a tough sell for an 18 year old making money at home to come to North America to live in somebodys basement, unless as you've alluded to, an NHL team wants to keep closer tabs on them.

Easier for a team to sell to an 18 year old that living in someones basement in North America will garner you much more interest and media coverage for a prospective NHL team than playing overseas regardless of how much European teams may be paying...playing in the NHL is the dream, European teams is just a solid backup option

Players from Russia and Belarus are banned from the Import Draft due to the invasion. CHL bans Russian, Belarusian players from its Import Draft

As of now, like the IIHF, the ban is indefinite. So it will likely end whenever the war ends and the IIHF ban goes away. I think it hurts kids from Belarus more than Russia, as the Russian kids can just play in the MHL (I mean more options are always better and CHL is a way to signal to NHL teams that they're eager to come over), whereas there aren't as many spots for kids from Belarus, as it's more limited to one team there. I think before the ban, Belarus kids were one of the countries where drafted Imports would frequently come over if they were good enough to make a team.

Don't feel sorry for Belarus. Belarus hockey is being punished for their support of the illegal horrific Russian invasion. Rightly so. Russians should be banned for life in the CHL along with countries that support this terrorist act. Mulligans are for golf.

There’s a difference between the state and the people. The people have no choice in support or not. Banning the people for life when the state needs to be reprimanded is not the solution you think it is.

Especially when you have a guy like Putin that isn't afraid to throw dissidents into the gulag for voicing anything negative against him....the people basically have to go with the flow whether they agree or not or face persecution...it's unfortunate for athletes as they are but a pawn in this political chess match

Personally I applaud the CHL for taking a stand against a murderous tyrant like Putin and the lackies that support his illegal invasion of the Ukraine. Their are only so many ways to get the attention of these types of people to voice your concern and the CHL made a an important statement.

The import draft isn’t at all “who is the best player” It‘s “who‘s the best player we can recruit” and a lot of the time NHL teams have a massive say on what these players do.

Hugely dependent on NHL draft.
That’s a large reason why the Import draft always takes place after the NHL draft has occurred.
