Inspired by the generational players thread. If Ovechkin is considered generational, then why not Matthews? Lets compare their first 5 seasons and see how they stack up against each other. Ovechkin competed directly against Crosby and Matthews directly against McDavid.

Point finishes first 5 seasons:

Ovechkin: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 3rd (rookie season), 13th = average 4,4th

Matthews: 6th, 9th, 22nd (rookie season), 44th, 61st = average 28,4th

Goal finishes first 5 seasons:

Ovechkin: 1st, 1st, 3rd, 3rd, 4th = average 2,4th

Matthews: 1st, 3rd, 3rd, 17th, 23th = average 9,4th

Assist finishes first 5 seasons:

Ovechkin: 6th, 10th, 20th, 29th, 40th = average 21st

Matthews: 63rd, 72nd 83th, 120th, 125th, = average 92,6th

Point/game finishes first 5 seasons (only top-10):

Ovechkin: 1st, 1st, 1st, 5th

Matthews: 6th

Goals/game finishes first 5 seasons (only top-10):

Ovechkin: 1st, 1st, 1st, 5th, 5th

Matthews: 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th

Assist /game finishes first 5 seasons (only top-10):

Ovechkin: 6th, 10th

Matthews: N/A

Trophy case:

Ovechkin: Calder, Rocket, Rocket, Art Ross, Hart, Hart, Lindsay, Lindsay, Lindsay

Matthews: Calder, Rocket

Playoff stats:

Ovechkin: 51GP 30+29=59 +11
Matthews: 32GP 13+11=24 -3

Easiest no I've ever voted on.

Young Ovechkin was an impressive playmaker as well as shooter, who competed for the Art Ross. He is also better at goalscoring, which is Matthews' forte.

Matthews is just a wrist shot, his vision is remarkably weak for such a highly touted player.

if matthews was generational, he would already have a hart, art ross, and multiple 100 point seasons, among other things.

answer is no.

I think he could be a generational goalscorer, in that he could end up clearly above the pack in his generation, if people want to use that term, but it's too early to tell, and it seems unlikely he'll reach generational overall player status, as he simply doesn't affect the game overall the same way young Ovechkin and Crosby did or McDavid does.

If Sidney Crosby is generational, is Jeffrey Skinner?

(the first conditional has very little, close to nothing with the second)
