The draft must be really, really bad this year if teams are seriously considering a first rounder for Nic Dowd. I'm not sure he's worth a first if you could retain 100% of his salary.

There were/are a lot of contending teams who need center depth. That's more likely the reason than the draft.

Not even remotely comparable...

Also a huge driving factor here for Dowd getting a 1st would be the fact that with 50% retention he'd only carry a $650k cap hit. That means getting your 4C for next year for $150k less than league minimum.


Evans even at 50% retention is still more than the $800k league minimum next year.

Goodrow is a comp, if the contract was made attractive enough. The Sharks did send back a 3rd in that deal. It wasn't a 1st outright.
