At the end of the season have the 5 worst teams in the NHL have a quick tournament. Their standings in the tourney will reflect the draft order. .ie the team that wins tourney gets #1 pick in the draft the second best team gets the 2nd overall pick etc... (every team plays each other once)

Do you think the regular season standings would be more meaningful if the top team in each conference got to pick which team they play in the playoffs?.. i.e the #1 ranked team in the conference may choose to play the 6 best team in the conference because they may play particularly well against that team or that team may have injuries or played poorly down the stretch.. The number 2 ranked team in the conference would then pick their match-up.. etc...

Bad idea because players don't care about draft order. In fact, a higher pick means a better prospect and he might push you out of a roster spot next season. Especially fringe players would have a conflict of interest.

Outside of Toronto and Buffalo recently, I don't think tanking is an issue like these forums would suggest. There are a few really bad teams like the Oilers, but they never tanked, they were just really bad. I dont know why HF boards pushes this teams tanking narritive, but it just doesn't happen.

You can think that Toronto tanked on purpose but when they finished last it was with 69 points and did not clinch last place overall until their 82nd regular season game. When Buffalo tanked for McDavid had 54 points in 2015 and when Colorado finished last in 2017 they had a record low 48 points.

Better idea. No RFA period. Entry level contract is two years. If the team still sucks, players leave...players keep leaving management gets fired fast. 10 years of this, teams fold.

Teams wouldn't tank for long, after a while they would just lose because no one good wants to stay. Doesnt solve teams being bad/tanking, but it would be fun to watch.

You won't solve tanking unless you impose some serious sanctions, which the NHL won't. Its part of the game...business is cyclical.

Nobody was tanking for Patrick/Hischier. They aren’t the type of players you intentionally bomb a season for. We were just regular old awful.

Org: Hey 30 year old fringe NHLer, go give it your all in this tournament so we can draft #1 overall and draft a guy who will most likely take your spot on the roster and have you looking around for a PTO in a few months.

Player: YOU GOT IT COACH!!!

I just meant points wise Toronto was not Colorado bad the years both of them finished last place overall. Notice how I said when Buffalo tanked for McDavid and I mentioned Colorado just having a record low in points.

How about if a team finishes last, we have a one round punishment draft, where 30 teams take players off said bottom team, 1st place goes first.

Every year dozens of threads whining about 2 or 3 teams looking to intentionally tank, as if many of the clubs don't get to the bottom of the standings through sheer incompetence.

Wasn't there a bunch of threads 12 months ago about how shameful it was Vegas built a tank team?

Tanking is an imagined problem. Tanking is not an issue. The lottery protects against tanking as much as the league needs 'protected' from it.

Teams placing 31-27 all get 20% odds to get the 1st to 5th picks then teams placing 26-22 all get 20% odds to get picks 6-10
Then teams placing 21-17 get 20 % odds to get picks 11-15

Can you imagine being the #1 center on a bottom 5 team and being asked to play your hardest in games where you aren't getting paid just so your team can draft someone to replace you?

So far under the current draft lottery rules where they have three drawings for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd picks, these have been the results.

2016

Toronto retained 1st overall.

Winnipeg moved up from 6th overall to 2nd overall.

Columbus moved up from 5th overall to 3rd overall.

2017

New Jersey moved up from 5th overall to 1st overall.

Philadelphia moved up from 13th overall to 2nd overall.

Dallas moved up from 8th overall to 3rd overall.

Colorado dropped from 1st overall to 4th overall.

2018

Buffalo retained 1st overall.

Carolina moved up from 11st overall to 2nd overall.

Montreal moved up from 4th overall to 3rd overall.

Imagine thinking that tanking is a problem when the team that got the second overall pick had 16 more points than the second worst team in the league.

The hysteria around tanking before the lottery changes were pretty dumb to begin with and have only gotten far worse after the change

Have to give the best players to the worst teams. That's the idea. Just don't count the last games: Try using just the first half of the season, for teams who don't make the play-offs, as draft order. With or without the lottery.

Or have a small pre-lottery lottery after the season on the game-number cut off, say in the range 43 to 60, so we reduce the fun in scoreboard-watching just before game 43.

So everybody could quit with the stupid tanking and "must-lose" game talk. At least in the second half of the season? And in particular in the closing stage of a season.

Then the last games would be without an incentive to lose them. They would be more fun if it is actually bad to be the worst team.

People do realize the league wants terrible teams to get better, right? It’s just bad for business for teams to be awful forever.
This. The whole idea of tanking is way overblown. It's honestly not a big deal at all, but HF would lead you to believe that it's the goal of 50% of teams every season...
