How popular is the NHL?

Hockey is not a niche sport in my opinion. Box lacrosse, arena football, and field hockey are niche sports. The NHL already has millions of fans and is going to get more popular in the next few years because of increased exposure from the new TV Deal. If the NHL wants to get even bigger and become mainstream like the nfl and nba they will have to expose more kids to the game through building more rinks and getting more kids playing street hockey and roller hockey. More rinks means the kids who can afford to play hockey are on the ice. The kids who can’t afford it should at least have access to roller hockey and ball hockey.

Wayne Gretzky is probably the only Hockey player that people who don't follow the game or sports in general, would even know.

I grew up in STL from the late 80's to the 90's, and Gretzky becoming a Blue in February 1996 was all anyone talked about. Not Cardinal spring training, The Great One 24/7. Everyone knew who he was.

....and f*** Mike Keenan.

Not shocked, had a new kid at work ask me "Who's this Lebron guy I keep hearing about ? Is he a singer ?" He was being very genuine.
I thought his name was James LeBron until that other bouncehoop player died last year or whenever it was.

It's not. Most of the people I grew up with (I'm 28) hardly care anymore and sometimes I don't either. I love the sport but the league is so lame and has been for a minute. Mostly older family members I have stopped watching 10+ years ago and the current game does not pull them back in at all. Hockey is losing their own internal fanbase and not generating nearly enough new fans. Since the 90s they've gone ass backwards.. They massively screwed up around the mid 90s and along the way have had some good ideas but generally have failed, much like MLB. It's a great sport but the brass sucks. Bettman sucks tbh. He creates markets and expanded the league but I don't think that's necessarily a good thing. There's no dneying markets like San Jose and Nashville were more successful than people thought but every league expands... It's a guaranteed revenue stream unless you do something stupid like put a team in Arizona. People using expansion plan as a cap on Bettman being a great commish is so stupid. The NHL had planned this regardless of who was in charge. All leagues do. Bettman tookover when hockey was red hot and even bball fans and non traditionally hockey fans knew who the hell Mario, Jagr and Messier were. Hockey was never the most popular but people were aware of it and tuned in for stuff like Wings-Avs, etc. It was niche. Now it's like WWE, where it has an audience but the casuals see it on tv and instantly change the channel. It's not the players fault, there is just little buzz and not many storylines. The league hasn't created any besides Sid vs Ovie and Sid didn't want to sell it or himself.

In terms of marketing and having smart, creative people running your league, the NHL is boring and plain. They don't have the right people in place to take the league to new heights. The NFL, MMA, and NBA said f this we're going to market and it worked. They are innovators. MLB, Boxing and the NHL are stuck in the mud. They refuse to adapt to the viewer and have alienated their loyal fans constantly messing with the rules. People don't understand the ramifications until it's too late. Kids today in Halifax are wearing NBA jerseys. The changes I've seen in just the last 5-10 years is shocking. I'm not saying this to panic or exaggerate, people legit don't care about hockey anymore. This forum is the only forum I am on that has hockey discussions. I post on a football based community, derived from the espn message boards and every year there is less general interest in hockey, baseball and boxing. There's a reason. If you can't sell someone your story, if you have no story why should anyone care? The biggest boxing fights right now are a result from clown youtubers lol. Baseball is only in the headlines for the wrong reasons like the Astros or cheating. Hockey, usually it has to due with fighting or something. I think the NHL needs to desperately bring in creative people who are passionate about hockey and it will reflect in the product. IMO they have passionless people who are complicate running the league. They have been there 30 years and have no reason to try. As long as they make revenue they are safe. It might sound crazy but it's human nature to get lazy and not try when you have no motivation. NHL owners are costing themselves millions by not forcing the leagues hand. Silver/Goodell are making franchise owners quadruple their investments within a decade. It's why the highest paid MLB player ever is trying to buy the worst NBA team of the last decade. And the young kids on Minnesota don't even know who A-Rod is lmao. He only just retired and was with J-Lo. That should tell you everything.

They really, really haven't. They have a generational player who wows you every night yet the also-ran Blackhawks get more coverage simply because they're a bigger market.

I get that to an extent. That being said every Original 6 gets more play than the other teams, not because of the prestige but bc they're typically in the big markets. I think an issue w/ the individual players is twofold. 1, most guys are very humble and don't want to call attention to themselves which leads to them being labeled "boring". 2, anyone who typically shows any kind of individuality is called out in a negative way. There are very few "personalities" in the league save for PK and PK comes off as an absolute toolshed.

How do you not know Lando Norris??? NHL literally has a trophy named after him

Also, if I didn't know who Peter North was and you told me there was a Pornstar on the list, I would definitely assume it's... Harry Kane

There was a commercial around a decade ago for one of those guitar video games that featured jeter from mlb, Eli Manning from the nfl, Kobe from the nba. There was a fourth athlete and shockingly it was not an nhler. It was Michael Phelps. No Sid Crosby. Just how it goes. Nhlers are not household names in the USA.

So let's see how well you do, if you get asked in the street.

Who is:

- Brad Keselowski - Nope
- Shohei Ohtani - Really amazing pitcher/DH for the Angels doing things not seen in MLB since Babe Ruth
- Aaron Rodgers - Butthurt crybaby QB for the Packers that is mad that he is expected to mentor his recently drafted replacement near the end of his HOF career after going 13-3 and losing in the NFC championship. Fun fact, he replaced HOF QB Brett Favre after Favre's Packers lost the NFC title during a 13-3 season!
- Simona Halep - No
- Lando Norris - No
- Nikola Vucevic - No
- Harry Kane - No
- Dustin Johnson - I think he's a golfer. Is this the guy with ridiculous power on his drives that unlike anyone else on the pro tours?
- Peter North - lol
- Penny Oleksiak - also lol.

No cheating.

What city was this, I’m not sure a lot of people would not even know those people. There are a lot of people have zero interest in sports.

This. You could do that in Montreal and many people wouldn't even know who Guy Lafleur is. My wife and her brothers have absolutely no idea about this.

Maybe hockey should just be happy as it is and not try to be more than is natural? Hockey is a winter sport after all, and it's not possible for kids to play anytime or anywhere as one can with other team sports. Maybe it should just concentrate on growing in the North instead of trying to create new markets in the South? Gather interest by creating rivalries between neighbouring cities or even more teams in the same city.

It is important for Americans that their professional sports league is by far the best in the world.

That's one reason why soccer can never become a truly popular sport in the USA as their soccer-league is rubbish and even if it gets better it is impossible that any one soccer-league would ever become absolutely dominant compared to others.

It's a constant competition between the Premier League, Serie A and La Liga.

I can ask people down the street who mahomes and Durant are and they wouldn't know either.

NBA has crap ratings too and can barely sell out most games.
