Regardless of analytical market value, JT won't fit the fast forechecking system Berube will implement. It's time for him to walk, unless he takes a $3m deal and plays on the 3rd line.

JT and Willie do not work, we need a #2 with wheels

So our 3rd line won’t be part of the fast forechecking system? Does our #2 have to be tough as well as fast?

A few European Leaf players came to aid of their country at the Worlds sadly only one Canadian Leaf player did and that was Tavares. He was on the ice for the final two minutes of the Swiss game taking draw after draw. I will never criticize him or anyone that gives it their all for their country.

We're not here to hand out participation ribbons though, at some point a Captain has to answer for his team's lack of playoff success. 1 round in Long Island, 1 round in Toronto...simply not good enough for that cap hit and a C on your jersey.

At least he got his revenge at WC. That should shut doubters for a moment!

It's so nauseating hearing him speak (After the Bronze medal game loss) "Obviously not the result we all wanted" well no shit. Thank God it's only 1 year left of him.

He's not overpaid. It was the price of getting him to Toronto and telling the hockey world the Leafs were serious. It allowed the signing and retaining of talent. End of story!

Right now his compatibles are around 6 million

more importantly his tax case is not good . Canadians teams already at a big disadvantage .

JT aint getting a penny more than 4m from me if he wants any term.. We already overpaid him. 4x4m
I see this as a little different going forward.

What I might try here is

1) Attempt to sign JT buddy Steven Stamkos as a UFA for 3 years @ $5.5 mil per this sumnmer to replace Bertuzzi amount,
2) Cut Tavares contract into 1/2 on a short 2 year deal extension at 2 years @ $5.5 mil which then overlay the 3 years of Stamkos.

So then in years 2 & 3 you could have the pair playing together for the combined $11 mil that JT takes up now.

XXXX - Matthews -- Nylander
XXXX -- Tavares ($5.5 mil) -- Stamkos ($5.5 mil)

With Marner dealt for defense and goaltending help.

You might still get solid enough production from JT and SS as secondary scoring to help the Leafs be successful in the playoffs.

All for Stamkos. May be bidding war. Sounds good though
