A big deal was made of Jeff Skinner's contract, and how it could affect the FA and RFA's this summer. Did it have an effect on contracts?

If it did why? If not why not?

It did because if he had signed his first deal for 8 years he’d have two years left at 5,725. Instead he now has 8 years at 9 per. Who’s to say he even gets 9 for 8 year after waiting two more years when he’s 29 years old ?

Plus he got disgustingly overpaid

It didn't have much effect because there's a salary cap.

Of course, a bunch are still unsigned, but Buffalo had a lot of cap space. They had no-one better to overpay, so they went with Skinner.

I think there is no doubt that Jeff's contract isn't being used as an example for agents.

That’s not true at all. Colorado has a lot of cap space too but know in the future it’ll affect them if they overpay a player. Buffalo should of known the same as they do have some high potential young players.

So you don't believe agents are looking at Jeff and his numbers to pitch their clients worth to their teams?

No. As also evidenced by other UFA's settling for much more reasonable contracts.

Everyone looks at that contract as an outlier. Much like Labanc's contract. How are you going to use that as a comparable?

i agree skinner is overpaid by 1-1.5 million right now but to say disgustingly is a bit of a stretch, i remember people here saying RoR is an overpaid 2c and a lot of people hated the eichel deal when he first signed it. if skinner continues to have 35-45 goal seasons while producing at 5v5 buffalo fans shouldn't worry about having someone overpaid by a million, especially considering the amount of cap we have coming off next year. we can easily sign reinhart to 5-6 year deal and then dahlin to an 8 year deal.

He hit ufa at 27 because he came into the nhl at 18.

Marner hits at 26. Boeser/Connor hit at 27.

Best to not sign away many ufa years now because the cba is set up to pay their ufas. So any talk about signing for term these guys want to be paid for those key years.

I’m not sure it makes that much difference in the big picture. As @SotasicA says above, the salary cap is the ultimate arbiter of contracts. Agents can and will use comparables to fight for their guy, but the cap ceiling is what it is.

If a player ends up holding out for a long time (and we have to remember it’s September right now, not December) then chances are it was going to happen regardless.
