Here is a basic look at how many goals the Leafs got from each position last season (these are not completely accurate for game by game lineups, but bear with me):

Hyman (15) + Matthews (34) + Nylander (20) = 69
Marleau (27) + Kadri (32) + Marner (22) = 81
van Riemsdyk (36) +Bozak (11) + Brown (14) = 61
Komarov (7) + Moore (6) + Kapanen (7) = 20
Ex. Martin (3), Johnsson (2), Gauthier (1), Leivo (1), Fehr (0), Soshnikov (0), Plekanec (0) = 7
Total Forward = 238

Rielly (6) + Hainsey (4) = 10
Gardiner (5) + Zaitsev (5) = 10
Dermott (1) + Carrick (4) = 5
Ex. Borgman (3), Polak (2), Holl (2), Marincin (0), Rosen (0) = 7
Total Defense = 32

So, the Leafs had a total of 270 goals last season (before you rail on me, the extra 7 goals in the standings are from the shootout). How many goals do you think we will score next season? I know that adding Tavares is exciting, but he only scored 1 more goal than JvR did last season. How much more will Matthews, Nylander, Marner, Kapanen, and Johnsson realistically grow? Will Marleau decline? Will Kadri get less ice time and drop into the 25-30 range?

Interesting questions to ask. Here is a basic projection from me. Note that these are not my actual line projections, but an attempt to fill in the gaps from last season to compare where the goals will come from.

Hyman (15) - Matthews (40) - Nylander (25) = 80 (+11)
Marleau (25) - Kadri (30) - Marner (25) = 80 (-1)
Johnsson (15) - Tavares (35) - Brown (15) = 65 (+4)
Leivo (10) - Lindholm (5) - Kapanen (10) = 25 (-2)

As far as defense goes, I don't predict much of a change. 35-40 goals from the back end seems pretty solid. Rielly and Gardiner probably won't get more than 15 goals combined, and the rest will all hover around 5 goals. So, my final prediction would be 285 goals, 15 more than last season.

Let me know what you guys think.
