Matthews currently sits with 18G in 20GP. To break Gretzky's record he needs 32 goals in his next 20 games. This is very very very unlikely but how hard would it be to get 32 goals in 20 games? Is it even possible for any player to do?

Well, it's a 131 goal pace over a full season.

I'd say it's pretty damn hard. Near impossible.

Could he keep that pace over 5 games? Maybe, but over 20 games it seems really unlikely.

The most in a 20 game stretch of all time is 44, so ya it’s possible. But considering that happened over 100 years ago I’m gonna go with the under.

Yeah... that is impossible in the modern nhl. If he is lucky he doesn’t lose more time to injury and wins the Rocket though.

Matthews needed to have a 42% better shooting%, and a 59% better ois% to get those 18 in 20. He's obviously going to normalize as this will likely be one of his best hot-streaks of his career.

There is no way that he is going to have a 78% more productive 20 games than he just had, when he already had to be incredibly lucky to do what he already did.

playing at a 1.6 goals per game pace for about 5-6 weeks straight seems totally reasonable.

The theoretical mathematics work for him to achieve this goal but there are too many variables to construct an accurate equation to extract a peer reviewable answer therefore the only logical answer as to wether he will or not is “maybe”.
