Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: $21,000,000 roughly bet.
  • Jorge Abreu celebrated the first 3-win day of his young training career which began with a perfect 2-for-2 in 2016.
  • Race 10: The $1 Pick 6 had close to a million added today and lucky winners collected $87,000+.
  • Race 9: Wondrwherecraigis (Brittany Russell/Luis Saez) wired the field and won the $100,000 Take of the Cat Stakes. The morning line favorite was cold on the board but the best rider at the meet (to date) delivered the trainer her first stakes win at the Spa. The Maryland-based trainer has excellent support with top notch owners including Michael Dubb and Sol Kumin and training mentors from Brad Cox, Joe Sharp and Tom Morley. As stated a few times in these threads, the wife of jockey Sheldon Russell is hard-working and has a bright future. She is also 26% lifetime. Russell has won four times with 15 starts at the Spa in her 4-year career. Not bad for arguably the best meet in America.

Pimlico (Maryland):
  • Race 9: The finish of the day. :naughty:

  • Race 4: Backstreet Gal (Johan Rosado/Milan Milosevic) had the upset of the day at 28-to-1 by nipping the 1-to-9 shot Frosteria (Charlie Marquez/Michael Stidham) who is owned by powerhouse Godolphin. The winning trainer has under 25 lifetime wins in his young career, prior he was an exercise rider in Maryland. The 1-to-9 prohibitive favorite locked horns with the 4-horse and was doomed following the heated battle giving rise to the closer, something that doesn't occur at Pimlico too often. And $59 winners with a 1-to-9 placing is even rarer.

Ellis Park (Kentucky):
  • Race 6: Guntown (Martin Garcia/Steve Asmussen) won the $51,000 MSW by more than four lengths as the 5-to-2 favorite. The 2-year-old colt was out for the second time and joins many other offspring to Gun Runner as a winner. Gun Runner babies are 25 12-3-5 (by my unofficial count) this year, the first time his babies have seen tracks.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Edgard Zayas had a winner today which put him atop the jockey standings with 93 victories, one more than Emisael Jaramillo. The Spring/Summer meet ends September 26.

Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: $32,000,000+. The track has handled over $400,000,000 at the meet which started last month. I predicted a record handle this meet, that mark is $705 million. This meet extends into Labor Day weekend.
  • Joel Rosario won three races, all early, and Irad Ortiz, Jr. later had a natural hat trick as each had 3-win days. Todd Pletcher and Bill Mott both recorded consecutive wins.
  • Race 6: Power Agenda (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Todd Pletcher) debuted to a close win over Don't Wait Up (Javier Castellano/Tony Dutrow). One of the best races this day.
  • Race 9: High Oak (Junior Alvarado/Bill Mott) won the $200,000 Grade 2 Saratoga Special Stakes. The 2-year-old colt is 2 2-0-0 lifetime and was the first black-type winner for sire Gormley. The winner is co-owned by sports radio host Mike Francesca. Alvarado, one of a handful of riders who has not had a successful meet, was genuinely pumped.
1200x0.jpg
  • Race 10: Got Stormy (Tyler Gaffalione/Mark Casse) won the $500,000 Grade 1 Fourstardave Handicap at 12-to-1. The 5-year-old mare won this race in 2019, is 30 12-6-3 lifetime, had earned approximately $2.5 million and will head to the Breeders' Cup Mile as this was a "Win and You're In" race. She was recently purchased for $2.75 million. This is undoubtedly one of the biggest wins of the star jockey's young career.

  • Race 11: The $1 Pick 6 paid over $73,000. This was the third straight day Saratoga paid gigantic totals in late exotics.
  • John Velazquez, Javier Castellano, Manny Franco and Junior Alvarado are all surprisingly 10% or under this meet.
Pimlico (Maryland):
  • Card: Racing was off the turf and the dirt track was initially listed as muddy.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Race 11: Marisa's Mission (Jose Morelos/Ronald Spatz) won the finale at 5-to-1 but more significantly was named after Marisa D. Federico, a Massachusetts woman who passed due to cancer about five years ago and who had a benefit held earlier this month in her honor. The horse's owner, Dennis Federico, was part of the family that owned Waquoit, inarguably one of the most famous Massachusetts-based horses of all-time.
  • Race 4: Perfect Silent Cat (Luca Panici/Sharon Boland) won the $60,000 Handicap at 12-to-1. The trainer has a long history in the sport but won for just the seventh time in her 2-year professional training career. Her father William rode the winner in the 1950 (yes, 1950) Kentucky Derby,
  • Edgard Zayas (10 3-3-2) and Emisael Jaramillo both won three times. Zayas has a 96-to-95 lead over Jaramillo atop the jockey standings this meet.
  • Handle: Exceeded $6 million.
Thistledown (Ohio):
  • Card: Five of the 10 races had $100,000 purses. The racing day focused on Ohio racing.
  • Handle: $1.3 million.
Arlington (Illinois):
  • Comment: To see the activity at this once prominent facility was a reminder of how distinguished Arlington was once. Whatever becomes of the structure, and the latest indication is the two horse racing proposals are on the backburner of four that applied, the brilliance of this dynamic establishment was in full bloom. A beautiful day, a beautiful turf course, a beautiful sport all expected to be part of a memory. Sad for all those who cherished the place. Pathetic display by any entity contributing to its end.
  • Card: Eight of the 10 races were stakes.
  • Race 9: Two Emmys (James Graham/Hugh Robertson) won the Grade I $600,000 Mr. D at the excessive odds of 27-to-1 in a barnburner defeating heavily bet shipper Domestic Spending (Flavien Prat/Chad Brown) who was sent off at 2-to-5 . Two Emmys broke his maiden at Arlington in 2019. Robertson, who hails from Nebraska but has had enormous success in Illinois in his career which extends 50 years to 1971, was perhaps the ideal winner of this race in what is expected to be the final edition. Robertson has been a mainstay in Illinois since the mid-1980s. How did he celebrate? Applesauce and chocolate milk. His son, trainer McLean, is a powerhouse at Canterbury in Minnesota. The race, formerly the Arlington Million, was renamed for Richard Duchossois who will turn 100 years of age in October.

  • Race 8: Point Me By (Luis Saez/Eddie Kenneally) was sent off the favorite and won the $300,000 Grade I Bruce D. Point By Me was out for the third time.
  • Race 7: Santa Barbara (Ryan Moore/Aidan O'Brien) was sent off even-money and defeated Mean Mary (Luis Saez/Graham Motion), also even-money, in the $400,000 Grade I Beverly D. Santa Barbara, an Irish-bred, won in the U.S. for the second time in two starts. She was the youngest horse in the race at 3 years old. That can speak volumes for the future. She is the real deal.
  • Race 6: Santisara (Flavien Prat/Chad Brown) won the $100,000 Grade 3 Pucker Up Stakes. The Irish-bred filly raced in the US for the second time.
  • Race 4: Richiesinthehouse (Jareth Loveberry/Larry Rivelli) locked horns with Locamotor (Luis Saez/Arthur Coontz) in an exhilarating stretch fight. Good stuff. The local rider beat the national sensation. Rivelli has 36 more wins than any other trainer this meet. Coontz, in his mid-30s and a small-scale trainer, took out his license in 2016 and has just 17 wins. Richiesinthehouse is a local star who is 11 7-1-0 lifetime at AP and 28 17-2-1 overall.
  • Jareth Loveberry, the leading rider at the meet, added three victories.
  • Luis Saez was 7 2-3-0. He will be in the running for Jockey of the Year in North America and even though this wasn't a stellar day for him, he still won twice.
  • Flavien Prat made a rare visit to Illinois and went 5 2-1-2.
  • Larry Rivelli has 36 more wins than any other trainer this meet and will in all probability win his eight straight title at Arlington. With the track not requesting dates in 2022, he will likely move onto Hawthorne.
Del Mar (California):
  • Karen Headley has 27 lifetime wins and had her first two-win day. She has been training on a smaller level since 2013.
  • Pick 6 Carryover: $1.49 million for Sunday's card. Mandatory payout next week.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Handle: $6.1 million.
  • Antonio Gallardo and Kazushi Kimura each won three times. Gallardo is an exceptional 22% since moving his tack from the U.S. a few weeks ago. Kimura leads the meet with 43 victories.
  • Race 8: Gretzky the Great (Kazushi Kimura/Mark Casse) won the $125,000 Greenwood Stakes. The horse, who ended a three race losing skid and won for the fourth time in eight starts, is owned in part by Gary Barber, a South African who first came to the USA (in 1982) when he won a trip to the Arlington Million (Illinois) which was run today, in another name, for likely its last time.

Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: $22 million.
  • Race 5: Gimmick (Tyler Gaffalione/Steve Asmussen) won a MSW at 12-to-1 and is another winner at the meet who ran previously at Churchill Downs. Gaffalione rode for e5 Racing, based in Florida, which is named after the Edwards' Family of five. Bob, the father, was CEO of a pharmaceuticals lab based in Boca Raton. His wife is from Saratoga. One of their daughters dates the jockey. Gaffalione is tied for fourth in victories at the meet among all riders. Gaffalione is having a solid meet and his win yesterday on board Get Stormy is perhaps a top three in his career. When jockeys kiss horses, it emphasizes their relationship.

  • Race 9: Star Devine (John Velazquez/Jorge Abreu), an Irish-bred, won the $125,000 Galway Stakes. Abreu exited the race winning with four of his past five starters his last two days. He is just establishing his resume having worked for Nick Zito and Chad Brown.
  • Dylan Davis is having a good meet. He isn't riding Cadillacs usually but his 13 and 12% are better figures than many big-named riders including two in the Hall of Fame.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Wild payouts: It was an atypical day for summer racing at Gulf.
  • Jesus Rios rode winners in consecutive races (5 and 6) and the $1 double paid a whopping $674.80 with 13-to-1 and 52-to-1 shots winning.
  • Race 6: Treasure Run (Jesus Rios/Henry Collazo) paid $107.40 as the longest shot on the board.
  • Race 7: The $.50 Pick 3 paid close to a staggering sum of $20,000.
  • Race 8: A 20-to-1 shot was elevated to victory via DQ. The $.50 Pick 3 paid over $2,500.
  • Race 10: The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $79,000.
  • Handle: $6 million.
  • Replay show:

Ellis Park (Kentucky):
  • Card: Five of the nine races held purses at $100,000+.
  • Race 8: Super Stock (Ricardo Santana, Jr./Steve Asmussen) won the $200,000 Ellis Park Derby in an impressive outing. The $1 superfecta paid over $50,000.
Del Mar (California):
  • Abel Cedillo rode a natural hat trick beginning with race 2. He finished 7 4-2-1 as part of a 4-win day.
  • Race 7: Pulpit River (Flavien Prat/Mike Puype) won the $150,000 Solana Beach Stakes at 7-to-1. The top two finishers, also Nardini at 10-to-1, were two of the longest shots on the board in a field of six.
  • Trevor McCarthy moved his tack from the mid-Atlantic to southern California but he is struggling this meet with an 81 4-9-12 (5%/31%) mark.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Olympic Runner (Rafael Hernandez/Mark Casse) won the Grade 2 $175,000 King Edwards Stakes at 7-to-1.
  • Handle: $5.6 million.

Emerald Downs (Washington):
  • Handle: $2.4 million.
  • Race 8: Background (Rocco Bowen/Michael Puhlich) won the Grade 3 $100,000 Longacres Miles Handicap by a head as the favorite sent off at 5-to-2. The 4-year-old Florida-bred gelding raced nine of his 14 races at Oaklawn (Arkansas) and made his debut at Emerald. The jockey returned to the track that helped make him a local star where he won three riding titles. After a lengthy 18-month absence due to injury, he relocated his tack to the Midwest. This race was in its 86th edition and is the biggest in the state.

Rocco Bowen is a superstar in the state of Washington. Just raw emotion...

The 2-day New York sales of yearlings concluded today and an all-time record of $18.5 million was spent. The RNA (reserve not attained) was the lowest since 1995. When people are dropping that kind of money for New York babies, that is a strong indicator.

The highest purchase was an Uncle Mo filly for $495,000 by locally based Dream Maker Racing.

Saratoga (New York):
  • Attendance: I was there!
  • Handle: $11 million+
  • Weather: Most racing was off-the-turf but slight drizzle early eventually dissipated and only gloomy skies prevailed.
  • Race 1: The Mean Queen (Thomas Garner/Keri Brion) won the Grade I $150,000 Jonathan Sheppard, a steeplechase event. The trainer entered four horses and finished 1-2-3 (also last). Brion was the former assistant to the race's namesake. Formerly, the race was called the New York Turf Writers Cup and ran in its 80th edition.
  • Race 3: Monshun (Joel Rosario/Ray Handal) made "a very powerful debut" as described by John Imbriale.
  • Race 9: Chi Town Lady (John Velazquez/Wesley Ward) and Poppy Flower (Jose Ortiz/Wesley Ward) finished 1-2 in the $120,000 Bolton Landing Stakes. The trainer sent out those 2-year-olds, his specialty, and excelled as is the norm.

  • Race 10: Clear Humor (Luis Saez/Brittany Russell) won convincingly as the prohibitive 3-to-5 pick. The trainer is 8 3-0-0 (38%/38%) at the Spa this year. That is a solid mark.
  • Luis Saez had three winners. He is the meet's winningest rider and is getting attention as not only a finalist for Eclipse Award Jockey of the Year but perhaps the leading candidate.
  • Big boys winning: Today was a day for the top names to find the winner's circle. Luis Saez (3), Joel Rosario (2), Tyler Gaffalione, Irad Ortiz, Jr., Jose Ortiz and John Velazquez all won.
Canterbury (Minnesota):
  • Event: Made in Minnesota Day as the race day featured local breds.
  • Race 6: Thealligatorhunter (Alonso Quinonez/Tim Padilla) won the $100,000 Minnesota Derby as the 2-to-5 favorite.
  • Race 7: Molly's Angel (Alonso Quinonez/Tim Padilla) won the $100,000 Minnesota Oaks at 9-to-1. Among the defeated was Star of the North (Ry Eikleberry/Francisco Bravo) who with seven straight wins. The filly is now 9 7-1-1 lifetime.
  • Oaks-Derby Double: Alonso Quinonez/Tim Padilla had back-to-back victories.

Saratoga (New York):
  • John Velazquez, Luis Saez and Joel Rosario each won twice. It was Velazquez's first multiple win day since July 4. He is the all-time earner in purse money at over $440 million earned. Velazquez is the 17th all-time leader in wins in North America annals and just 31 victories behind Suffolk Downs (MA) legend Carl Gambardella for 16th place.
  • Handle: $10 million. For the meet, which began July 15, $514,481,730 has been bet. The meet closes September 6. The anticipation for this meet was mentioned here days prior to the start. The money generated has proven that to be correct. The handle is likely to surpass the all-time record following closing day September 6.
  • Card: Racing was off the turf due to uncooperative wet weather.
Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • Race 7: Dr. Blarney (Tammi Piermarini/Karl Grusmark) improved to 34 24-1-5 including 9 6-1-1 at Delaware. The 8-year-old Massachusetts-bred, of which there are precious few remaining, was sent off at 5-to-1. Piermarini is the second winningest female jockey in North America annals. The Massachusetts-native is only behind Julie Krone but not close enough to be a factor in breaking the record at this stage of her career.

Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: $16 million. Roughly $530 million handled to date.
  • Race 10: The $1 Pick 5 paid over $25,000.
  • Race 9: Averly Jane (Tyler Gaffalione/Wesley Ward) won the $120,000 Skidmore Stakes for 2-year-olds. The filly is 3 3-0-0 lifetime and has also won at Churchill Downs and Keeneland. Ward enters girls against boys in these races and one won. He also finished third (colt) and fourth (filly) while the 8-to-5 morning line favorite (a filly) was scratched. Ward is 35% with 2-year-olds in 2021 (24% lifetime) and an almost unthinkable 36% with first-time starters in 2021 (24% lifetime).

  • Tyler Gaffalione rode the late daily double. I predicted great things when he was in his earliest riding days and he is blossoming before our eyes. He went from his home state of Florida to dominating Kentucky the past couple or so years and now is fifth at Saratoga. Think about that for a moment: A meet with active Hall of Famers and very established local riders.
  • Luis Saez rode the early daily double. He is solidifying a nominee spot (only three are chosen) as the Jockey of the Year in North America.
  • Todd Pletcher sent out two horses and both won. His 17 wins is third best at the meet. He was inducted into the National Hall of Fame earlier this month.
Remington (Oklahoma):
  • Race 8: Rated R Superstar (Ramon Vazquez/Federico Villafranco) won the $175,000 Governor's Cup. The 8-year-old was out for the 55th time and was victorious for the ninth time.
Ferndale and Golden Gate (California):
  • Ferndale's fair meet in Humboldt County commenced with Arabians. The meet also includes quarter horses and thoroughbreds. The meet is in its 124th edition.
  • Golden. Gate's Summer Meet Part II runs August 27 - October 3. Part I ran from July 23 -August 1.

Sunday at Woodbine is one of the most extensive cards in North America this year.

The Queen's Plate is in its 162nd running which makes it the longest continuously held race in North America.

The Queen's Plate is the first leg of the Canadian Triple Crown.
  • 1. August 22-- Queen's Plate -- Woodbine Racetrack (ON) -- 1 1/4 miles -- $1 million (Ca.)
  • 2. September 14-- Prince of Wales Stakes -- Fort Erie Race Track (ON) -- 1 3/16 miles -- $400,000 (Ca.)
  • 3. October 3 -- Breeders' Stakes -- Woodbine Racetrack (ON) -- 1 1/2 miles -- $400,000 (Ca.)

Twelve horses have won the Canadian Triple Crown but none since Wando in 2003.

Early projections are prognosticating an all-time record handle at Del Mar on Saturday. A handle exceeding $25.8 million is possible.

There will be a mandatory payout of the Pick 6 which in itself could exceed $6 million.

^Hopefully no one was injured and the horse is being attended.

Saturday, August 21, 2021
  • Mark Casse entered 20 horses across four tracks and won four times.
  • Steve Asmussen has four wins (race night ongoing).
  • Chad Brown entered eight horses and four won.
  • John Velazquez is 29 wins away from 16th place all-time in North America history. He is the only rider to have earned over $400 million lifetime in purse money.
Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: $25 million.
  • Race 10: Malathaat (John Velazquez/Todd Pletcher) won the 141st running of the Grade 1 $600,000 Alabama Stakes. The 3-year-old filly entered off her only defeat and is now 7 6-1-0. She was sent off the 1-to-2 favorite and didn't disappoint. Malathaat was purchased for $1,050,000 by Shadwell in 2019 and has earned $1.5 million. The stable, which has earned about $50 million in North America, is now overseen by Sheikha Hissa Hamdan Al Maktoum, the eldest daughter of the late Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum who was deputy ruler of Dubai before passing earlier this year.

  • Race 9: Technical Analysis (Jose Ortiz/Chad Brown) won the $200,000 Grade 2 Lake Placid. The Irish-bred filly is 6 4-0-1 lifetime and is a multiple graded stakes winner after today.
th
  • Race 4: Hand the Truth (Benjamin Hernandez/Richard Metivier) was the only bomber of the day at 20-to-1 as he nosed Tellaperfecttale (Tyler Gaffalione/Thomas Morley). The winning trainer entered 33 0-2-1 in 2021 and last won on July 12, 2020.
  • Luis Saez added three wins to his meet lead.
  • Tyler Gaffalione rose to fourth place in the riders' standings with a pair of wins.
  • Trainers: Michael Maker and Chad Brown are now tied with 22 wins at the meet while Todd Pletcher has 20 victories. Brown and Pletcher, arguably the top two east coast trainers the past few years, both won three times today.
Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Paco Lopez won four times. He is one of two jockeys to have won 200 races in 2021.
  • Race 14: Horseshoe Falls (Heriberto Figueroa/Wayne Potts) won the finale by more than 23 lengths.
  • Race 9: Code of Honor (Paco Lopez/Shug McGaughey) won the $250,000 Grade 3 Philip Iselin Stakes. The 5-year-old is 17 7-4-2 and has earned over $2.8 million. He ended a 6-race skid after his most recent win 14 months ago. He is a multiple graded stakes winner and finished second in the 2019 Kentucky Derby.
08-21-21-09-Code-Of-Honor-FIN_02-768x587.jpg
Pimlico (Maryland):
  • Closing day: Tomorrow, August 22. The meet opened April 22 but was extended multiple times due to track surface inconsistencies at Laurel.
  • Charlie Marquez, at the age of 19, will win the riders' title.
  • Claudio Gonzalez will win the trainers' title.
  • Fair meet: Timonium runs August 27 - September 6 with its highest purse structure ever.
  • Laurel: September 9 - December 31.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Edwin Gonzalez rode three winners in his first race day since being injured (leg) July 3. He moved his tack from Penn National (PA) in March and has been a hit in south Florida since.
  • Handle: $8.7 million.
Del Mar (California):
  • Handle: Over $36 million bet tonight at Del Mar which destroyed the existing record of $25 million (non-Breeders' Cup).
  • Pick 6: Mandatory payout and more than $8.8 million was added. All winners received more than $10,000.
  • Flavien Prat had three winners. He won the first three graded stakes.
  • Race 4: Forbidden Kingdom (Juan Hernandez/Richard Mandella) wired the field in winning the $70,000 MSW race. Bob Baffert debuted three horses and finished 2-3-4. There was an infrequent inquiry/objection that involved the same trainer (Baffert) and the original order of second and third was overturned. Rhetoric (Flavien Prat), a $600,000 purchase, was elevated to second Kamui (Joel Rosario) was purchased for $875,000 in 2020 was dropped to third. Portsmouth (Abel Cedillo), a $150,000 purchase, finished fourth.
  • Race 6: Private Mission (Flavien Prat/Bob Baffert) romped home in the $100,000 Grade 3 Torrey Pines Stakes.
  • Race 7: Mo Forza (Flavien Prat/Peter Miller) won the $300,000 Grade 3 Del Mar Mile, rallying to win by a head. He last raced 10 months ago but the layoff seemed to work to his advantage as he looked brilliant in the final quarter-mile.
  • Race 9: Going Global (Flavien Prat/Phil D'Amato) won the $300,000 Grade I Del Mar Oaks. The Irish-bred 3-year-old filly is 10 6-1-0 lifetime but more impressively 6 5-1-0 in the U.S. (all in California).

  • Race 10: Tripoli (Tiago Pereira/John Sadler) won the $1,000,000 Grade 1 Pacific Classic Stakes at 6-to-1 and with it received an invitation to the Breeders' Cup Classic as this was a "Win and You're In" race. The upset winner is a 4-year-old son to Kitten's Joy, a sire who generally succeeds on turf more so than dirt. This was the colt's 14th race but just third and second victory on dirt. His three most recent starts have been on dirt and has a 3 2-1-0 mark. Pereria won the 2010 World Cup in Dubai but this could very well be his first Grade 1 victory in the USA.

  • Race 11: Astronaut (Victor Espinoza/John Shirreffs) won the $300,000 Grade 2 Del Mar Handicap as the second highest price on the board at 24-to-1. Connections received an invitation to the Breeders' Cup as this was a "Win and You're In" race. It was the jockey's lone mount of the day. The $1 exacta was $458.20. The $.50 tri was over $2,300. The $.10 super returned more than $3,500.
  • Bob Baffert was 9 1-1-2. Not a good day though he did win a graded stakes..
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Handle: $7.3 million.
  • Race 8: Corelli (Kazushi Kimura/Jonathan Thomas) won the $150,000 Grade 3 Sinspiel Stakes.
  • Race 10: Boardroom (Luis Contreras/Josie Carroll) won the $150,000 Grade 3 Seaway Stakes.
  • Mark Casse entered his stable, or so it seems, and won three times.

Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: $15 million.
  • Off the turf: Some racing was removed from the turf due to inclement weather.
  • Race 9: Horologist (Junior Alvarado/Bill Mott) won the $120,000 Summer Colony Stakes in a dominating performance. She was sent off the even-money favorite and wired the field, winning by more than eight lengths. The 5-year-old New Jersey-bred has won nine times in 25 starts. She entered off a second place finish in the Grade 3 Shuvee. She factored and didn't disappoint. It was Alvarado's lone ride of the day.

  • Jose Ortiz, Manny Franco and Ricardo Santana, Jr. won twice.
  • Tyler Gaffalione rode the winner in the finale for the third straight racing day.
  • Trainers' Title: Michael Maker (23 wins), Chad Brown (22) and Todd Pletcher (21) are battling for the leading conditioner at the prestigious meet.
Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Canceled: Due to weather concerns.
Pimlico (Maryland):
  • Final Day: Today was the final day of racing at the extended meet. The track seemed to handle the adjustments from the temporary closing of Laurel fairly well. Pimlico reopens for the Preakness 2022 meet probably in early May for approximately three weeks. This year, which was scheduled to follow a similar schedule of May racing only, the meet ran April 22 - August 22.
  • Upcoming Maryland Racing: Live racing in Maryland moves to Timonium for the State Fair Meet August 27-29 and September 3-6 before returning to Laurel Park for September 9 to December 31.
  • Leading Jockey: Charlie Marquez at the age of 18 (or 19?).
  • Forest Boyce had a good meet. The Baltimore native had the highest win percentage (21%) of the nine riders with 20+ wins.
  • Leading Trainer: Claudio Gonzalez won a Maryland title for the 14th time covering the past 15 meets and 17th overall.
  • Race 5: Fast Cash (Grant Whitacre/Mario Serey, Jr.) completed an exorbitant $2 daily double that paid $992.20 by winning as the longest shot on the board at 23-to-1. The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $47,000.
  • Handle: $2.5 million.
Ellis Park (Kentucky):
  • Canceled: Due to a barn fire at the track. All horses were removed safely by staff personnel.
Del Mar (California):
  • Handle: $16 million.
  • Race 7: No injuries in the spill in which multiple riders fell from their mounts. The race was declared no contest. Thankfully all involved were mostly unscathed.
  • Race 8: Lieutenant Dan (Geovanni Franco/Steven Miyadi) won the $100,000 Grade 3 Green Flash Handicap.
  • Bob Baffert sent out three starters and two won.
  • Southern California Racing Schedule: Del Mar runs until September 6. Los Alamitos runs September 10-26. Santa Anita runs October 1-31.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Handle: $16.1 million is the second highest handle in the 162 years of the event.
  • Card: The extensive card ran 13 races with post times from 12:25 pm until 7:25 pm ET. One of the biggest days of the the year for the track with much pomp in between races. A festive day.
  • Purses: Ten of the 13 races held purses in excess of $100,000.
  • Race 6: Our Flash Drive (Patrick Husbands/Mark Casse) won the $150,000 Grade 3 Ontario Colleen Stakes.
  • Race 8: Mambointheforest (Sahin Civaci/Ronald Sadler) stunned viewers by wiring the field at 79-to-1, the longest shot in a field of 12. The winner paid $161.10. The $1 exacta was an enormous $732.25. The $.20 super paid over $6,300.
  • Race 9: Mutamakina (Dylan Davis/Christophe Clement) won the $175,000 Grade 2 Dance Smartly Stakes. New York based trainer and jockey held off favorite Etoile (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Chad Brown), even bigger New York-based names. Good, exciting finish.
  • Race 10: Safe Conduct (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Phil Serpe) won the $1,000,000 Queen's Plate Stakes in a close finish as the 3-to-1 favorite in a field of 13. Safe Conduct is 7 3-1-0 lifetime and won a black type race for the first time. He had raced five times in New York and once in Florida. This race is the first leg of the Canadian Triple Crown. The Queen's Plate is in its 162nd running which makes it the longest continuously held race in North America. The Triple Crown:
    • 1. August 22-- Queen's Plate -- Woodbine Racetrack (ON) -- 1 1/4 miles -- $1 million (Ca.)
    • 2. September 14-- Prince of Wales Stakes -- Fort Erie Race Track (ON) -- 1 3/16 miles -- $400,000 (Ca.)
    • 3. October 3 -- Breeders' Stakes -- Woodbine Racetrack (ON) -- 1 1/2 miles -- $400,000 (Ca.)

Safe-Conduct-Queens-Plate-Aug-22-2021-5.jpeg

  • Race 11: Silent Poet (Justin Stein/Nicholas Gonzalez) won the $350,000 Grade 1 Highlander Stakes. The 6-year-old won for the 11th time in 22 starts and each race has been at his home track of Woodbine. Gonzalez has been training since the 1970s.

Saturday's card from Saratoga is still being finalized but the TV schedule has been confirmed. Three networks will be covering at different times. The Travers Stakes is the feature race as the "Mid-Summer Derby" has been held since 1864. Essential Quality and Midnight Bourbon are expected to be in the field.

Japan could be making his U.S. debut in the Sword Dancer. He has 18 starts overseas. Channel Maker should be in that race, too.

Letruska and Swiss Skydiver could battle in the Personal Enisgn.

Life Is Good -- my Kentucky Derby pick from months ago but who was sidelined (small chip in ankle) prior to the race and eventually transferred from the barn of Bob Baffert to Todd Pletcher -- is likely to run in the Allen Jerkens. Life Is Good is 3 3-0-0 lifetime but his last race was March 6. It could be a tuneup for a Breeders' Cup race but most eyes will watch to see where the horse stands.

Whitmore, Mind Control and Yaupon could all be in the Forego.

Gamine could be in the Ballerina. She is in Bob Baffert's stable. All she has accomplished is a 9 8-0-0 record and $1.4 million earned.

Saturday, August 28FS1 - 11:30am-3pm
FS2 - 3-5pm
FOX - 5-6:30pm
FS2 - 6:30-7pm

Parx (Pennsylvania):
  • Card: 12 races of which four were stakes. A big card in Philly but the weather from earlier in the week didn't cooperate and interfered with the entries.
  • Handle: $3 million.
  • Race 11: Fulsome (Florent Geroux/Brad Cox) won the $300,000 Grade 3 Smarty Jones Stakes. The 3-year-old son to Into Mischief has won four of his past five starts and is 9 5-1-1 lifetime. Fulsome had raced in the near-center of the racing nation (Kentucky, Indiana, Arkansas and Louisiana). He is owned by Juddmonte Farms (founded by Prince Khalid bin Abdullah of Saudi Arabia).

  • Race 10: The Grade 3 $200,000 Parx Dash Stakes was postponed and moved to August 31.
  • Race 9: Lovely Ride (Reylu Gutierrez/Bret Calhoun) wired the field and won the $150,000 Cathyrn Sophia Stakes.

  • Race 8: Beren (Frankie Pennington/Butch Reid) wired the field and won the $100,000 Parx Summer Sprint in a romp.

Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: $13 million.
  • Luis Saez maintained his comfortable lead among all riders with three more victories.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. rode three winners.
  • Jockey of the Year?: I would guess most eligible voters for Eclipse Jockey of the Year in North America have Luis Saez and Irad Ortiz, Jr. 1-2 in some form.
  • Chad Brown catapulted to the top of the trainers' standings with an improbable 5-for-5 afternoon. I am not sure how often that has been accomplished but this is Saratoga...feats akin to that are rare and should be exalted.

Saratoga (New York):
  • Chad Brown trained three more winners. That makes eight winners in two days.
  • Race 10: The $1 Pick 6 paid over $74,000.
  • Handle: $17 million. Be prepared as this weekend will be something extraordinary with the handle. My prediction at the start of this meet was that an all-time handle would be set based on exterior issues not limited to the void of 2020. The internal strength of the sport at Saratoga, the presence of powerful names and some of the world's best horses united. When the meet concludes Labor Day weekend, we could see the prior mark not only passed but obliterated.
Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • Race 5: Atta Kid (Abner Adorno/Tim Shaw) rallied to win for his 6th lifetime victory in 47 starts. The top three horses were separated by less than a length. The 7-year-old was 0-for 18 lifetime on turf but maybe likes Delaware with a 3 1-1-1 record. The gelding was on a 20-race losing streak and last won June 30, 2019 at Suffolk Downs (MA).
Indiana Grand (Indiana):
  • Moved post times: Due to heat, post time began at 10:00 a.m.
  • Race 9: The $.50 tri paid close to $5,000. The $2 exacta was an extraordinary $984.60.
Canterbury (Minnesota):
  • Race 8: Stretford End (Karlo Lopez/Robertino Diodoro) caught my eye in a $10,000 purse as he was purchased for $600,000 but was winless at 8 0-5-1 in seven races in California and one at Oaklawn under Simon Callaghan. Horses at that price don't reach Canterbury often. Diodoro, one of the leading trainers in the state, also owned the horse and was under his direction for the first time. The 5-year-old horse wired the field and paid $3.20. Following the race, he was claimed by Miguel Angel Silva.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Canceled: Heat advisory.

Medina Spirit will race for the first time since losing the Preakness Stakes following his win in the Kentucky Derby. Medina Spirit is 7 3-3-1 lifetime and is a multiple graded stakes winner. His Derby victory is pending and a final decision has yet to be made by the Kentucky Horse Racing Committee regarding the win. He tested positive post-race for betamethasone, a therapeutic medication that is not allowed on race day. Bob Baffert the trainer, claims the banned substance was issued unknowingly via a cream to treat dermatitis. The medication is allowed but not on race day. A sample to prove Baffert's claim is in a lab in New York and any ruling is unlikely to be made without a clarification of the lab result.

Medina Spirit will in all likelihood run next in the $1,000,000 Pennsylvania Derby on September 25 at Parx (Philadelphia).

Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: $24 million.
  • Card: 11 races of which six held purses of $150,000+.
  • Luis Saez rode three winners. He is the runaway leader at the meet with 56 wins.
  • Joel Rosario rode three winners. He is in fourth place with 31 wins this meet.
  • Race 11: A very lengthy review to an objection claim overturned the initial result and put up was Fast Gordon (Jose Lezcano/Linda Rice) over Pivotal Run (Manny Franco/George Weaver). The $1 Pick 6 paid over $36,000.
  • Race 9: Americanrevolution (Luis Saez/Todd Pletcher) won the $250,000 Albany Stakes for New York breds. Bobby Bo (Flavien Prat/Bob Baffert) was a well-beaten second.
  • Race 6: A dead heat for win.
  • Chad Brown sent out just one starter, a loss, but has won eight of his past 13 sent. He sends out 21 horses the next two days.
Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Frankie Pennington is 9 4-2-0 (44%/67%) at the meet. The Philly-based rider won today.
Timonium (Maryland):
  • Opening day: Today opened the brief state fair. Laurel re-opens next month.
  • Weather: Lightning in the area prevented the last two races to be run. The race day began at 3 pm ET.
  • Graphics: Timonium is the lone track in the state -- of three -- not owned by The Stronach Group. The simulcast graphics were from prior to the rebranding of Laurel and Pimlico and instead of the pinkish theme and boxed info viewers got the orangy-yellow, black and white combo which I prefer. TSG rebranded its tracks a couple or so years ago with lime green for Santa Anita and butternut yellow for Golden Gate in addition to the blue of Gulfstream. Similar layouts with the colors the exceptions for the five tracks. The former configurations get my nod but the current designs have been accepted.
Charles Town (West Virginia):
  • Handle: $7.1 million set the track record, previous mark was $5.7 million.
  • Signature day of the meet: To be updated as racing goes into the night.
  • Card: 13 races of which nine had purses $75,000 or more including five at $150,000+.
  • Front Runners: It was a good night for front runners especially in stakes.
  • Arnaldo Bocachica/Jeff Runco won four consecutive races as a team. That happens about as often as the proverbial blue moon. The jockey and trainer are local stars.
