John Velazquez is appealing his 3-day suspension issued by California for the DQ given to him in Saturday's finale in which he was placed third following a second place finish. The suspension came due to a mid-race riding infraction involving clearance.

Velazquez is to be suspended March 14 (Sunday), 19 (Friday) and 20 (Saturday) with the final date being the Louisiana Derby which would deny commitments at Fair Grounds.

Velazquez finished 11 2-1-3 in his travel to Santa Anita during the three days of racing. He normally rides in New York or Florida and fair or not seems to get the calls in New York the rare times there are racing objections or inquiries. But California is different even though his DQ'd horse was for Bob Baffert.

According to Ron Anderson, super agent who recently took Velazquez's book, if they win the appeal the suspension would carry into the Florida Derby on March 27 where of course the rider has additional commitments.

If the appeal is granted, the suspensions would have to be met on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays per California rule. I am not sure if that can be permitted for a trio of dates down the line but it doesn't seem to be an option.

This video doesn't show the full effect.

Biographical articles with horse people are always enlightening. Hockey and racing have a long established connection from players as owners to owners who like to play.

Diodoro chose horse racing over hockey, begins Derby push in Rebel

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. –Trainer Robertino Diodoro found himself at a crossroads in his early 20s. He could make the final push needed for a career in hockey after being a goalie since the age of 6 or he could turn to the other sport he grew up in, horse racing.

Diodoro at that point had dedicated most of his life to both, making the year-round commitments hockey requires of athletes one step from the pros, while working alongside his family at the tracks on the circuit in his native Alberta, Canada.

“As I got more serious about horse racing, that was the same time I was supposed to get more serious about hockey,” Diodoro said. “And I think the hockey started suffering because my head was into horse racing. So, I still loved hockey, thought I could do both, but I really couldn’t. It takes 100 percent dedication, just like most things, including racing.”

Diodoro threw himself into racing and at the age of 46 the Calgary native has his first Kentucky Derby prospect in Keepmeinmind. The horse won last year’s Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes at Churchill Downs and will launch his 3-year-old season Saturday in the Grade 2, $1 million Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park.

Even with the distaste lingering from Churchill Downs's decision to sell the land of Arlington Park (IL) for redevelopment, the important Spring schedule at the home track was released today and it is their backbone. Once Keeneland's short Spring meet comes and goes (April 2-23), CD will be the prime track in the commonwealth.

Here goes:
  • Dates: April 24 through June 26.
  • Purses: An all-time high $13.4 million.
  • Stakes: 40.
  • Kentucky Derby: 147th running of the $3-million GI Kentucky Derby will be held May 1.
  • Kentucky Oaks: 147th running of the $1.25-million GI Kentucky Oaks will be held Apr. 30

T.D. Thornton of Thoroughbred Daily News released his Derby Dozen today. His opinion but I created a cheat sheet to help with some pertinent information.

Just a matter of personal opinion, I think he has Spielberg too high (the purchase price is tough to overlook though) and the same with Helium who may not run again until the Derby and has turf pedigree especially the sire.

Not on the list: Concert Tour
runs this weekend and could crack many lists with a strong performance. Medina Spirit keeps surprising, too.

Prevalence runs Thursday in a tuneup.

Mandaloun has been on my watch list as a possible outsider/spoiler. Life Is Good tops my list.

Tapit
turned 20 years old this year -- officially January 1st as with all horses but he was foaled 20 years ago last week. One of the great sires of all-time. Even though he is advancing in years he has top contenders once again. Tapit, however, has never produced a Kentucky Derby winner despite being a 3-time winner for top sire in North America.

ILLINOIS
What appears to be Arlington Park's (IL) final year as a race track, the schedule for 2021 was released.

The 2021 meet opens Friday, April 30 and will run for a total of 68 live racing days before concluding Saturday, Sept. 25.

The Arlington Million has ceased to exist and will be renamed for the former owner who is now 99 years of age, Dick Duchossois. The race has been renamed the Mister D. Stakes with a purse of $600,000 and will be run on August 14.

A couple of belated notes:

Turf Paradise (Arizona):
  • Glenn Corbett became the 77th jockey in North America history to crash the 4,000 win barrier. He made his bones at Prairie Meadows in Iowa where he is in the Hall of Fame.

  • Race 7: A $162.00 winner.

Winningest riders in North America (2021) through early evening. The separation between first and second is enormous:
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. -- 101 wins
  • Tyler Gaffalione, Luis Saez, James Graham, Arnaldo Bocachica -- 52 wins apiece
  • Paco Lopez, Sonny Leon, Adam Beschizza -- 51 wins apiece
  • Timothy Thornton -- 50 wins
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. is in another stratosphere. He is just 11 wins away from Luis Saez's meet record of 137 set in 2017-18, this meet ends late March. He added five wins to his collection and finished 8 5-1-1. He began the day with a natural hat trick. Today marked the second straight racing day (a break in between dates) in which he won his first three mounts. He has won nine of his 17 rides the past two racing days. Ortiz has nearly twice as many wins as his closest competition in America with 101 victories.

MARYLAND
Pimlico (MD) announced its annual brief meet today which extends from May 7 - May 31. There will be 16 black-type races including 10 graded stakes the weekend of May 14-15. The highlight is the 146th running of the $1,000,000 Preakness Stakes on Saturday, May 15. The 97th running of the $250,000 Black-Eyed Susan will be on Friday, May 14.

I have not read if Timonium (Maryland State Fair) will operate its annual weekly late Summer meet this year. Laurel of course is the workhorse track in the state and its Winter meet ends March 28. The 19-day Spring meet at Laurel runs April 1 - May 2. Laurel then runs its Summer meet following the Pimlico schedule.

  • Boston Harbor (Jerry Bailey/Wayne Lukas) has died at the age of 27. He was 8 6-1-0 lifetime and earned close to $2 million. Boston Harbor was named winner of the 2-year-old Horse of the Year for 1996 with a brilliant record that saw him win six out of seven starts including four graded stakes highlighted by the 1996 Breeders' Cup Juvenile. He shattered his leg in his first start of 1997 but recovered and went into stud duty, mostly in Japan, and sired many graded stakes winners. He lived a long life (roughly 78 in human years).

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Chalk: Favorites won eight times on the 10-race card.
  • Race 8: Prevalence (Tyler Gaffalione/Brendan Walsh) won at 1-to-9 in his second start and could be pointed towards Kentucky Derby preps as a late bloomer.

  • Tyler Gaffalione won three times and elevated himself to second in North America jockey wins this year.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. won twice and is now nine wins away from tying Luis Saez's 2017-18 meet record for victories.
  • Current jockey leader board: Irad Ortiz, Jr. (128 wins), Luis Saez (80), Paco Lopez (80) and Tyler Gaffalione (78).
  • Handle: $8 million.
Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Race 5: The $.50 pick 4 paid over $9,000.
  • Handle: $3.8 million.
Fair Grounds (Louisiana):
  • Gabriel Saez had a four-win day and hit the board with each starter finishing 6 4-1-1.

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Kendrick Carmouche added two wins to his meet lead and appears destined to win his second straight NYRA title.
  • Jockey leaders: An odd configuration on top as sevens are lucky. The top four riders have 67, 57, 47 and 37 wins, respectively.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Canceled: Earlier this week the track announcer today's card would be canceled due to an outbreak of equine virus in one of the barns.
  • Saturday: Five stakes, $450,000 in purses.
Tampa Bay (Florida):
  • Handle: $4.5 million.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Race 10: The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $66,000.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. added three wins and continues to steamroll in 2021.
  • Tyler Gaffalione added two wins
  • Current jockey leader board: Irad Ortiz, Jr. (131 wins), Luis Saez (81), Paco Lopez (81) and Tyler Gaffalione (80).
  • Handle: $8.3 million.
  • Replay show:

Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Handle: $4.2 million.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Handle: $6.5 million.
  • Race 4: Missy P. (Flavien Prat/Richard Mandella) shined in her debut.

  • Flavien Prat had one of the most impressive days in Santa Anita history riding six straight winners, all in consecutive races, and finishing 7 6-0-1. He won for five trainers. There have been 10 riders who won at least six on a card, last happening in 2006. The record is seven and on that day in 1987 was the other time a rider won six straight races at Santa Anita. The 28-year-old French-born jockey has won three Breeders' Cup races and the 2019 Kentucky Derby as part of a successful resume in North America.

WHITMORE: Not many horses in the history of racing have won the same race five times but Whitmore will attempt to perform that improbable feat Saturday in the Hot Springs Stakes at Oaklawn. The 8-year-old colt is 38 15-11-3 with $4.2 million earned lifetime. He last rode in the Breeders' Cup Sprint in November, a win. He finished 19th of 20 in the 2016 Kentucky Derby.

My comment above (posted below, too) based on one man's top dozen in which Concert Tour wasn't listed. He will be now! This horse was in my top five entering today. Baffert is something beyond legendary at Oaklawn even with his hiccups like in 2020.

Not on the list: Concert Tour
runs this weekend and could crack many lists with a strong performance.

  • Irad Ortiz, Jr., the 2-time defending Jockey of the Year and runaway leader in wins across North America this year, served the first of his five-day suspension imposed by Gulfstream. He will next race on March 20 at Fair Grounds in Louisiana. There wasn't a huge card at Gulf today by weekend standards.
  • Bob Baffert sent out six horses and finished 2-3-1. He won two of the three races he entered.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Handle: $8.8 million.
  • Dylan Davis and Manny Franco each rode three winners.
  • Rob Atras trained four winners. The pride of Winnipeg via Arizona had one of the best days of his young career. Trainers don't often win four times on one card. He sent out five horses.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Card: Five races $75,000+ and three $100,000.
  • Handle: $2.3 million.
  • Race 1: Alexander Chavez, a 22-year-old Panamanian, rode in the US for the first time and won. He had been riding in Panama.
  • Sheldon Russell rode three winners in succession. As part of the hat trick, he scored twice for his wife Brittany Russell. The duo is an imposing team.
  • Charlie Marquez, who is 17 or 18 years of age, got his first stakes win today. A picture is worth a thousand words...
EwZFbe7XEAAKYuT
Tampa Bay (Florida):
  • Handle: $6 million.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Handle: $12.6 million.
  • Junior Alvarado placed four times today. He has not won with his past 29 mounts but has hit the board 20 times in that stretch (0%/69%). Something else that is nearly incomprehensible.
  • Jose Ortiz had a natural hat trick.
  • Tyler Gaffalione had three straight winning mounts.
  • Jockey race for second: With Irad Ortiz, Jr. in a virtual lock as the meet champion, Tyler Gaffalione (83 wins), Luis Saez (82 wins) and Paco Lopez (82 wins) are in a fierce battle for next best thing.
  • Race 7: Sensible Jim (Corey Lanerie/Carl Nafzger) debuted. Not much to offer other than the trainer is the much revered Hall of Famer who had Unbridled and Street Sense among others. He is in semi-retirement and has just two winners since the start of 2105. For Nafzger to have an interest sends a signal to keep an eye on the horse. He is famous for not having orders go first time out.
  • Replay show:

Fair Grounds (Louisiana):
  • Mitchell Murrill, the pride of Alabama, won four times including a natural hat trick and finished 10 4-2-2. He has hit the board with 14 of his past 18 mounts the last two days.
  • Race 10: The $.50 Pick 4 was huge at $11,000+.
Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Handle: $16 million. The track was a center attraction in America today.
  • Race 5: Shedaresthedevil (Florent Geroux/Brad Cox) wired the field to win the $350,000 Grade 2 Azeri Stakes. She is a multiple graded stakes winner, is 12 6-2-3 lifetime and has won four of her past five starts.
  • Race 7: Silver State (Ricardo Santana, Jr./Steve Asmussen)won the $500,000 Essex Handicap.
  • Race 9: Carlos L. (Alex Canchari/McLean Robertson) wired the field at the staggering odds of 47-to-1 to win the $150,000 Temperence Hill Stakes. Robertson, one of my top trainers in North America who excels at Canterbury in Minnesota, has it tougher in Arkansas but he was wildly successful here. Remember what I have said about Oaklawn? Bombs happen with frequency. Today the $.50 Pick 5 paid over $108,000.

  • Race 10: C Z Rocket (Florent Geroux/Peter Miller) won for the sixth time in his past seven starts and for the 10th time in 24 starts after winning the $200,000 Hot Springs Stakes. Among the defeated was Whitmore who had the brilliant run of winning this specific race in four straight years. C Z Rocket had failed to hit the board in four prior starts at Oaklawn.
  • Race 11: Concert Tour (Joel Rosario/Bob Baffert) collected 50 points towards entry into the Kentucky Derby with a monster-like performance in the $1,000,000 Rebel Stakes. He won by more than four lengths as the second choice on the board. Runner up was Hozier (Martin Garcia/Bob Baffert). Even when Baffert loses, he wins! Baffert won the Rebel Stakes for the eighth time, he already held the high mark. Caddo River (Florent Geroux/Brad Cox) showed little as the favorite and ran off the board.
OIF.68Wgcl0TN2QXAAS1GNbENw
  • Ricardo Santana, Jr. - Steve Asmussen teamed for three wins.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Handle: $10.6 million.
  • Flavien Prat scored another hat trick and the past two days has amassed a record of 14 9-3-1. That is almost incomprehensible.
  • Race 2: Triple Tap (Flavien Prat/Bob Baffert) scored an easy win in his debut. The 3-year-old son to Tapit who is half-brother to American Pharoah and was homebred by Summer Wind (Jane Lyon) won by more than four lengths in a seven furlong prep for greater things. Said Baffert "We were always pretty high on this horse. It just took a while to get him to the races because Jane is very patient and they're her babies, and I got to take care of her babies. It's really exciting because Jane puts so much time and effort in and she loves her horses, and she probably makes me more nervous sitting next to her during the race. I was explaining to her, 'I think you're OK,' but it's exciting. You got 'Pharoah's' brother and he can really run, and that's a big plus."
  • Race 7: Gregorian Chant (Juan Hernandez/Phil D'Amato) won the $100,000 Grade 3 San Simeon Stakes.
  • Race 8: Swiss Skydiver (Robby Albarado/Kenny McPeek) won the $300,000 Grade I Beholder Mile Stakes. I had my doubts if she was a one hit wonder under the jockey but she proved that not here. Albarado entered today 0-for-35 in 2021 and was unofficially on a 75-race losing streak. He has been given a filly to rejuvenate his lack of winning in the past year or so. The 4-year-old Swiss Skydiver is 13 7-3-1 lifetime and is a multiple graded stakes earner. Albarado is 2-for-3 when riding the filly and had just two prior wins in approximately 135 rides since they won the Grade I Preakness in October.
