they are selling the guy they JUST got last year that was supposed to make tfc all awesome? (sigh)

They are selling a 32 year old striker who wants out.

Defoe was never the guy. He was the complementary piece to their project. Didn't work -- now they've brought in a younger, more physical, and active striker who can perhaps better link up with the midfield.

What's a Jozy? Sorry, I'm not well versed in soccer.

Jozy Altidore. It's his first name.

yes trade someone who was a decent european player for some random nobody

jajajajajajajajajajajajaajaja

He's not got the same finishing as Defoe or track record, but he's not a nobody.

Jozy isn't a nobody.

Plus, we are going after a somebody, and it might be fair to say Gio is a better player than Defoe, and plays midfield.

Our mid to front is going to arguably be the best in the league.

We just need to try and upgrade our back now.

Nah, Gio is not a better player than Defoe. He can however replace Defoe's pace. And he's also more of a winger than a midfield player.

From the link above. Wonder if TFC might try and package Gilberto and some of our firsts for the first overall pick, and draft that Canadian star?

Don't Know, just an idea.

Signing Giovinco would force Toronto FC to make another move, opening up a Designated Player spot for the Italian. Brazilian striker Gilberto would be the casualty of such a move. MLS rules state Gilberto would have to be off Toronto FC’s roster before the first game of the season, no matter when Giovinco would join. Gilberto showed glimpses of genuine talent in his first season in MLS, scoring seven goals and showing steady improvement as the season progressed. There is believed to be a genuine market for Gilberto’s services. His potential availability adds another layer of intrigue as trade talks continue to dominate the MLS landscape ahead of Thursday’s MLS SuperDraft.

Not too sure, but I think it will be difficult to draft someone with more talent and potential at the center forward position than Gilberto.

Rather than that, isn't it better to use Gilberto along with the plethora of 1st rounders to improve our D ?

The Canadian star in the MLS draft Cyle Larin is over RATED, Hamilton is a better player and we should give him a chance, Hamilton has been scoring at every level he's played for.

Adam Straith's contract demands making it very unlikely that he signs in MLS this winter. Shame really

Told at least two of the Canadian clubs have had contact with him but nothing coming of it so far.

Ya Altidore is confirmed and so is Defoe to Sunderland after he passed his medical. The Giovinco rumours are getting stronger too. And we should be getting a few new players tomorrow from the draft

At least there is some news now... last year at this point we brought in Jackson, Morrow, Gilberto, Bradley, Defoe, DeRo. So far this year nothing besides Findley, not even rumours

Gilberto and Altidore seem like similar type forwards. Don't think they make an effective duo

Not really. Altidore is a beast, a large target man that can hold up play with a decent touch around goal. Gilberto is more of a creative playmaker, better with his feet in tight, and can score from distance.

They have entirely different skill sets and might compliment each other quite well.

MLS has some extremely ridiculous rules like designated player rule.

If it wants to compete with other leagues, this rule needs to go.

MLS has no chance at competing with other leagues. That's why we get EPL washes like Jozy who couldn't even crack the lineup in Sunderland and they come over here and get paid like superstars.

I don't follow mls too closely, more lurking but after reading many threads this league has some very crazy, confusing policies and procedures in terms of players and trades and allocation etc. the average fan is driven crazy. Guess I'll just wait and see who toronto has on the field

To be fair... its oranges and apples.

MLS attendance and prices don't compare to BPL, Serie A etc.

Sure with more talent you could up the attendance and prices here but the game just doesn't have the same drawing power it does overseas. I would assume the DP rule is in place to keep things sane payroll wise. The league has to stay profitable first and foremost.

Yup. What kind of formation would we now have. Altidore is more of a finisher than a creator, while Defoe could do both, and doesn't have the same speed in transition, so I'd like to see less of a counter strike style. Any good non-DP CB's or defensive mids out there on the market?

DP rule keeps the league from developing. You have to spend money to make money.

No one is going to come pay money to watch a bunch of nobodys play trash tier soccer.
