Column by Dan Parker, American columnist who appeared in Montreal via the Gazette about the 1920 Swedish team that appeared in the Olympic Ice Hockey tournament.

Interesting background, should be vetted carefully but contains a gem about the Czechoslovakian team using a very defensive approach in their game against Sweden.

Thanks for sharing the Rocket Richard story. I can remember reading in Red Storey's memoirs that beginning at about that time, Richard became quite famous in the East Bloc and was quite knowledgeable about the development of the game and players there and in the Soviet Union. Red recalls how shortly before the famous 1972 series with Russia, the Rocket told him and anyone else who wanted to listen that the Soviet players were not at all to be laughed at or underestimated and that he was one of the few in Canada who had such views.

Interesting story and perspective from February 1977 about Boris Alexandrov, CSKA causing a major concussion with what seems like a needless/reckless hit.
Two game suspension for what seems to be a repeat offender.

https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=EXswAAAAIBAJ&sjid=x6EFAAAAIBAJ&hl=fr&pg=6662,2456881

From Russian sources: Valentin Gureyev (Spartak) had stripped Aleksandrov off the puck in the Spartak zone. Aleksandrov chased Gureyev into the CSKA zone and when he caught up with him he checked him in the back. Gureyev lost balance and crashed headfirst into the board. The concussion he suffered put him out for the season. Aleksandrov received a 5 minute major and was subject to internal and public criticism. The "Sovietsky Sport" paper quoted by the Montreal Gazette also printed a comment by Dmitry Ryzhkov who compared Aleksandrov to a bully and dismissed the excuse brought up for him on occasion of earlier incidents ("he is still young, he will mature"). Ryzhkov wrote that the player had grown older but was still a "boy" as he had failed to become any wiser over time.
As the Montreal Gazette correctly points out, Aleksandrov was suspended for two games by the Sport Technical Commission of the Soviet hockey federation, but the USSR Sports Committee stepped in and asked for a more severe punishment. Therefore the Sport Technical Commission added a conditional suspension: any new offence by Aleksandrov would lead to his automatic ban for the remainder of the season. The incident also cost Aleksandrov his spot on the Soviet national team.

1958 Whitby Wins WHC

Front page and sports section coverage of the final game. Whitby 4 - Soviet Union 2

sports section series of stories and Dink Carroll column:
https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=lkwwAAAAIBAJ&sjid=d6gFAAAAIBAJ&hl=fr&pg=4620,1609038

Best game and tournament coverage that I have found for a WHC. Excellent portrayal of the final game with comments about the players, including the Soviets.

Dink Carroll's column is very telling ,especially Lynn Patricks comments about Sologubov, Tregubov, Alexandrov and Kopylov. Most telling is the praise and interest in the two Soviet defencemen, Sologubov and Tregubov. The 1957 and 1958 Bruins,Stanley Cup finalists, had the best balance on defence with Flaman, Stanley, Boivin, Bob Armstrong and Doug Mohns who played a fair amount at LW.
The 1957 and 1958 Bruins gave the Canadiens the toughest time in the SC finals between 1956 and 1960, inflicting three of the nine playoff loses that the dynasty suffered. seeing Sologubov and Tregubov as potential teammates or even replacements for three future HHOFers is high praise.

Bumping for a worthwhile tip.

The Bill Gadsby tip above also works for columnists and reporters. If looking for Dink Carroll, Pat Curran, etc articles or columns.

Furthermore it is possible to fine tune the search by using the numerical code for the newspaper. 1946 is the code for The Gazette, a Montréal newspaper that Dink Carroll wrote for. 1946 Dink Carroll within the quotation marks produces The Gazette results.

Where exactly do you find this numerical code for each newspaper?

March 1, 1976 Doug Gilbert Column and Article West German Tour

Interesting article and column in The Gazette about the 1976 West German National team tour of Canada:

https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=IfUhAAAAIBAJ&sjid=9aEFAAAAIBAJ&hl=fr&pg=4340,363529

Column touches on a chasm between the CAHA and eastern Canadian univerities. The Erich Kuhnhackl article discloses his two salaries relative to his hockey Schedule.
Doug Gilbert' final word is telling.
