With only a handful of other known ring galaxies available to study ...

... the sample size is still too small to yield an easy explanation. So either it will take more astronomical exploration to build the observed cases (could mean many decades of searching), or some astrophysicist will dream a plausible explanation after consuming too many green chili cheeseburgers & the debate will be refocused. Science!
