High School Player Attacks Ref After Ejection

And apparently it's not the first time he has attacked a referee.

A Texas high school football game took a sudden turn on Thursday when a player who'd been ejected ran onto the field and slammed into the referee. During the game between the Edinburg High Bobcats and the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo High Bears, Edinburg's Emmanuel Duron was ejected.

After the ejection, he went back onto the field looking like he wanted to take on the referee. He aggressively ran onto the field and slammed into the referee, Fred Garcia, who was unsuspecting and fell to the ground. After the incident, the referee was evaluated in an ambulance outside the stadium for a potential shoulder injury, as well as concussion-like symptoms. He did not return to the game.

Duron was escorted out of the stadium by four Edinburg Police Department officers who were working security at the game.

Edinburg went on to win the game, 35-21, without Duron. According to The Monitor, Duron, the team's "star defender," was suspended in the 2019-20 soccer season for an incident similar to the one that took place on Thursday. He is also a standout wrestler, and The Monitor named him All-Area Boys Wrestler of the Year last season.

An update from TMZ:

The Edinburg High School football player who ran onto the field during a game to hit a referee Thursday night is now facing an assault charge.

Emmanuel Duron, 18, was charged with class A assault around 11 a.m. Friday morning during an arraignment at the Edinburg Municipal Court.

A cash surety bond of $10,000 has been set for the football player.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that this kid might have some anger issues. Now it's time to wait for the apologists to chime in that we need to be more understanding because this poor young man came from a broken home or that maybe the ref said something that upset him.......both times.

Update from CBS Sports:

Emmanuel Duron, the Edinburg defensive lineman who was ejected and charged with assault after hitting a referee during a high school football game, won't be participating in Texas sports for a while. On Monday, the University Interscholastic League executive committee suspended Duron from all athletic competition for the remainder of the 2020-21 school year.

The executive board also placed Edinburg football coach J.J. Leija on probation for the rest of the school year and the school's athletic department is on probation for the next two years.
