There are two things that are guaranteed to go with a president’s Trophy; the burden of a perceived curse as well as the hopes of every other playoff team that you get beat quickly and badly.

GM Niece acknowledges that the track record of past Trophy winners is very bad with only one having won the HFNHL Cup in 14 years and many having been eliminated in the first round. The Wings themselves eliminated last year’s Trophy winner, the Ducks, in the first round last year. That said GM Niece refuses to accept that as an inevitable outcome “as soon as we let thoughts of curses and doom enter our minds we will only beat ourselvesâ€.

In the Blues the team faces not only a long time division rival but a team that has been every bit the Wings equal this year as the teams split the season series 4-4 – the only divisional rival that can claim that this season. The Blues will also be the sentimental favorites among many, having been on the wrong end of the perceived Trophy curse on a few occasions, there are obvious sympathies among some to see the Blues return the favor to someone else – I might even have been one of those sympathetic observers if I wasn’t GM of the opposition this time round ;) There was also parity in the goals for and against during the season match-up and neither team displayed any advantage at home having split those as well. In a playoff match-up the difference in regular season points mean nothing it’s all about how you play against the one team you’re facing now and in this case Detroit is bound to have its hands full with a dangerous adversary.

No matter what happens the Wings will come to play "we’ve beaten the odds before and we have to believe in ourselves that collectively we can do it again" said captain Eric Belanger.

Game on.
