Using attendance standings is dumb because not all arenas are the same, and the Devils or Islanders can never finish higher than like 20th or something because of the size of their arenas. Somebody has to finish last and somebody has to finish first.
Also, you do realize the Devils are having their best attendance year ever, right (NOT COUNTING LOCKOUT YEAR)? For the 2nd year in a row, they're averaging over 90% capacity.
2013-2014: 15,012 / 16,592 = 90.4% (NOT COUNTING STADIUM GAME)
2014-2015: 15,126 / 16,592 = 91.2%
If you adjust that to the old capacity number (17,625), it would be 15,933 for the 13-14 season and 16,074 for this year.
I can do this because there were no seats removed from the arena. There's still 17,625 seats in the arena. They simply stopped taking the luxury boxes into account when posting the attendance numbers. It's just like how even though the "capacity" at Yankee Stadium is 50,000 something, but a sellout is usually posted as 49,000 something.
Also, the Yankees have been struggling with attendance too recently. Attendance doesn't say much for either the Yankees or Mets. A 3rd MLB team can be supported here. Will it ever happen? No. Because there is no need for it.
