I have decided to get with the times, and try to follow some of the discussion on advanced stats. The problem is that every place I look, it is assumed that you already know what all the terminology means and how to interpret what they post, I was wondering if someone on this board could go through the trouble of actually explaining the terminology and relevance of the various statistics that are used. I found a site on the Canes Board that looks clear enough, but unless you already have a base knowledge it is as difficult to follow as any other site. Maybe finding the data on their site is easier, but understanding it is not. Here is the site, can someone explain the terms they use, and if there is a better site perhaps post a link to benefit all the newbies interested in following this new trend in hockey during the upcoming season. Thanks to anyone willing to give it a shot.

You could try the "fancy stat summer school" at:

Start at the bottom and work your way up. I can't vouch for the usefulness of these articles, though, as I was already familiar with advanced statistics before glancing over them.

I've never seen any advanced statistics used in a hockey context never mind on this board or on the hockey blogosphere.

Everything used by these analytics people is statistics 101.

it's probably called "advanced" because it goes beyond the goals - assists - +/-. not because of it's complexity ;)

It also gives a false veneer of respectability to the people who dabble in it, and it deliberate obfuscates the material.

ETA: There is some hard work involved in collecting the information in the first place.

Yes and no, I know it's not really advanced as you dont need much knowledge in math/stats to understand it (for example, never took stat courses in my life or anything and I "get them") so in that sense it's not really "advanced"... but it is in fact more advanced (so to speak) than the +/- or goals/assists, and really if people are dumb enough to think of them as anything more than that, or that it's really hardcore statistician stuff, it's really not the problem of those who gathered data and built their stat website and al'.

You can only dummy proof your products to an extent ;)

Actually, I was thinking more along the lines of algebra 101, or maybe pre-algebra. Not really abstract enough or "statistical" enough for a stats designation.
