Have we learned our lesson about "lunchpail, heart n' soul grinders?"

A narrative frequently trotted on these boards is that the Islanders' biggest problem is that they get pushed around and "aren't hard to play against."

Well, how has trading a soft, whiny brat (and defensively efficient point producer) for a tough as nails "guy who plays a different role" worked out for the Islanders?

Hits =/= wins. Narrative =/= wins. Goals and defense = wins

And people wanted to see Martin go as a "sweetener". It should speak volumes that Boston fans were wanting him.

Keyword "fans."

Martin's a fan-favorite because of his flashy hits and cliched "heart on his sleeve grinder" characterization that stems from his lack of offensive talent.

As for his on-ice play, he's just not all that valuable. We have two of the top 4 hits leaders...but does that make it any harder to score goals through this inept defense?

The Isles may stink, but it's not because of Matt Martin (or anyone on the 4th line). He could certainly be playing better, and I honestly thought he'd turn into a 20 point kind of guy (and he still may), but he's the least of our problems. Our defense and goaltending are atrocious. Our 1st line is incomplete with the vanek trade. We're likely a lottery team again next year. But again, Martin is the least of our worried.

That trade is like the 4th biggest problem with the team. There's the goaltending problem, the coaching problem, and the GM problem, and the GM problem leads to this. Garth had a good thing into last offseason and managed to regress in every way possible.

Much like the former AMac did.....should have shipped Snow off with him

Replace Clutterbuck with Nino and the Isles would be in the playoffs.

Never really insinuated that. Just venting at Garth's terrible asset management and the rationalizing of that godawful Clutterbuck trade.

So with fresh, new steaming pile of **** just dumped on us, you bring up a trade from almost a year ago? Better late than never, I suppose.

Trading for Vanek didn't work out either, but that doesn't mean we should avoid highly skilled, proven scoring line players either.

I think what malPhoney might be saying is look at Nino's numbers this year in what one must view as his first real shot at the NHL level. His stint with the Islanders on the fourth line should be scratched he was destined to fail. And compare that to players like a Cuttlebuck,McDonald and alike all the running around and hitting yes it great but we have too many of that type of player. Now look at what Nelson and Lee have shown and you can see that Nino would have given us similar results large body's good skills net front presence wining battles for pucks on the boards. . This team has to many soldiers yes each team requires role players but we have too many and one can not dispute the size issue and while Im at it I hear we play a speed game if thats the case we need some players other then Grabner who have some speed.
