Habs trade Weber to Leafs for 2 1st's. Habs offer sheet Marner and Matthews at 12m and 15m. Impossible for Leafs to shed salary to match because of NTC's and Habs get their center.
 What?
This makes absolutely no sense. Was that the intent?

This is horrible for the leafs. I got habs homers don't get hockey and think its just another in the long line of trades that embarrass their franchise but off are the leafs paying a ton to do the habs a favor.

OP is a Leafs fan... and how is that paying a lot for a top dman?

Realistically Weber just isn't going to be traded at 50% retained. The Habs fans in this thread are right, it would take a king's ransom to get Weber with the Habs retaining a $3.9 million cap hit for the next seven years. But I just don't see a team paying that for a 33 year old defenseman who has recently had some injury problems and is signed until the end of time itself.

Habs are better off either (a) offloading his entire contract for a lesser return or (b) keeping Weber while he's still very good and then giving up some assets to move him to a cap floor team when his salary drops off (he's owed less than 11% of his contract over the final five years). Ideally with (b) they're through this rebuilding/retooling phase which would take the sting off giving up some futures. IMO (b) also makes sense because they get to wait and see if he does actually decline. For all we know he'll bounce back from his injuries and play at a high level until the age of 40 like Chara.

Leafs fans can't make trade offers other leaf fans wont like? News to me...

Also you suggestiong Webber is still a top d man in 2018 shows its not worth my time to respond. You are highly delusional about your own team.

Weber contract is built around a much lower total salary the older he gets.

It goes from 6M to 3M to 1M. his salary is nothing to be scared of..

The other point that people seem to ignore is that Montreal doesn't care about cap recapture for Weber's contract after next season, since they wouldn't be on the hook for any. If Weber's play declines sufficiently, Montreal can simply put him in a position to wonder if its worth it to him to keep playing for 1 mil a year vs. making that in a front office somewhere.
