Simple enough flyers need young forwards with top six potential and have a surplus of young left handed dmen the habs have and need the inverse.

Nikita Scherbak for Sam Morin

Scherbak had top six upside but has had expectations derailed as a result of injury the same can be said for Morin and his top 4 upside. Also both players will be 23 by end of this year ( Morin is 5 months older).

Thoughts?

The Flyers dont "need young forwards with top 6 potential"

They have Nolan Patrick and Travis Konecny already in the top 6 and Morgan Frost, Joel Farabee, Jay O'Brien, Wade Allison, and Isaac Ratcliffe as forward prospects with legit top 6 potential.

Morin should slot in perfectly as our 3rd pair LD that plays a shutdown role, PK specialist, while providing a huge physical presence.

No thanks.

Giroux signed for 4 years
JVR signed for 5 years
Voracek signed for 6 years
Konecny on his ELC

I don't think the Flyers need any top 6 wingers right now. Then they have:

Lindblom and Simmonds for 3rd line this year.

THEN they have the onslaught of other wingers coming like: Farabee, O'Brien, Allison, Ratcliffe, Laczynski, Kase, Rubstov, Aube-Kubel, Strome, Bunnaman, Twarynski, Sushko, Laberge, Lycksell, etc...

I think the Flyers are ok on wing now and into the future.

In my limited viewing of Scherbak, I'm leery of his consistency in effort. He's got great hands and when he grabbed the puck with a bit of space, he moved it with determination. Like a lot of offensive forwards, though, he seemed to lose his focus when he had to play for an extended period in the defensive zone.

That being said, I appreciate your effort to find a balanced deal. The value is there for sure.

Philly needs depth at D a lot more than another forward. we have too many forwards as it is.

Yeah, one thing Hextall's been very good at is restocking our prospect pool. Our best names may have made it to the NHL by now, but there's a ton of depth and a ton of competition for only a few slots. If we were to move our young guys, we wouldn't really need to do so in order to balance our pool; we'd more likely be moving a couple guys to consolidate for a higher end name. If something like that isn't out there, then we're probably not looking at making a move involving the kids at all.

That's fine, the Habs need a potential top 6 forward more than a 3rd pairing shutdown dman anyway.

Eh we'll wait out Morin a bit more.

If he hits, it's a big addition to the backend that we can't replicate in our system

Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t do this as Philadelphia but come on lol. You can’t just name every forward you’ve drafted in the last 3-4 years and say “they’re all coming”

The point is that Scherbak wouldn't stand out among that cast so why would they trade away a defenseman that is still well regarded within the org?

I think the Habs need more offensive help than the Flyers. Hopefully Scherbak gets a real chance this year as he had impressive stats in the 2nd half of the AHL season.

I agree with the may as well wait for Morin. Let's not pretend he has 1st rd pick value any more. At this point may as well go all the way and see if he is useful or bust.

I think he's the same level of prospect as Lindblom. After Farabee, O'Brien, Allison, Ratcliffe, most of these prospect are on the outside looking in IMO. They might do it, but it's not even a coin flip!! (I might be wrong on one or 2 I don't know them all very well, but I know most)

This may be the case, but it doesnt change the fact that a physical d-man is more of a need to us than another winger prospect. Wings are covered today and for the next 4 years b y good vets, and by that time, the kids should be taking over. Its not a knock on Scherbak, but the trade is just a bad fit.

I agree, I like the thought process behind this trade. I think value is there, It just depends on personal preference. I still think Scherbak needs a shot on a top line with good players to shine so i'd be reluctant for that reason alone.

Yeah it's ok. I don't think it's a good fit from our side either! Even tho we have a lot of depth on the wings too, I think our Right side is a bit thin and Sherbak is probably the best option long term after Gallagher.
