Yeah - what a difference without Merrill. I found that pretty interesting. I'm not sure what they could do, except maybe split up the d pairings?
I thought I saw a couple of shifts in the 1st with Gustafsson-Weber and Chiarot-Kulak, but would I do that regularly tield late in the third or in OT? No.

Marner is their best player

We all realize this, but most Laff fans don't; their unconditional love for Pornstache is too strong, thanks in large part to the Leafsnet corporate machine...without Matthews, Marner would just be setting up Q-Tip Head to win Rocket trophies; without Marner, Pornstache is Dany Heatley-lite, a star goal scorer but nowhere near considered a Top 5 player in the League...

No only that there is more upside in playing Kulak and gus than playing the guy with exactly zero playoff experience.
Experience is a factor if the players with experience are demonstrably better, they're not.

Ride the horses, play the top two pairs for most of the game.

When you need to spell them, throw out a pair with a LOT more experience who understand their only role is to eat the clock and not make any mistakes.
Except they all make mistakes, veterans or rookies.

I'll repeat, 2 goals against deflected off Petry, Edmunson had 2 turnovers that directly led to goals against.

If we get over this hurdle, then consider letting the kid in where a potential mistake can be off set.
Like you would for a veteran?

Should we throw belzile into the mix becuase it "MIGHT" work? How about asking drouin to dust off the skates? He COULD be good again.

The last part is a lie, he's never been good.
Belzile? Drouin?

Say what now?

If you think that this is so unconscionable I am sure you can find oodles of examples where a healthy rookie D makes his playoff premier in an elimination game where his team went from down 3-1 to tied at three,

I mean it must happen every freaking year, right? Becuase NOT doing it is such an affront.
I never said they should play Romanov tomorrow, so not sure who you're debating that with.

The Leafs fans all calling themselves cursed is such cope lmao, it's because the media has hyped them up as a contender for the past 4 years when this is the first season they had legitimate defensive structure and with Brodie and Muzzin at least one guy on each of their top two pairs who can actually defend.

It's just so bizzare that they lose to one of the best teams in the league in Boston with dogshit defencemen and no good defensive structure and call that a "curse". Even last year, the Leafs were what, maybe the 10-12th best team in the league and Columbus was somewhere in the mid-high teens? The 10th best team losing to the 16th in a bo5 when the other team gets a hot goaltending performance isn't a "curse", your team just wasn't that good and you lost a 55/45 series.

This is the first year they had a legitimate top end team with depth and structure and good defencemen. They were probably the 6th best team in the league behind Colorado, Tampa, Boston, Carolina, and Vegas coming in to the playoffs. THIS year is a huge choke but the whole "cursed" narrative is just Leafs fans being convinced their decent top 10ish teams in 2018-20 were actually heavyweight contenders like they should be this year.

"people are telling me to wear a heart monitor, the subtext being that i might ACTUALLY CROAK ON CAMERA"

i like steve, but this level of fandom looks unhealthy

I don't know about you guys but I literally can't carry a conversation when watching Habs games. All I can think of is if I was in Steve's shoes, it would be the most boring watch along of all time.

Really, you don't like vanilla comments in those silly post-game interviews. I mean, I hate the post-game interviews - I wish the players didn't have to speak post-game (and I'm guessing most players also wish that too). But given that they are forced to speak, I love the vanilla comments. Stick to the cliches. Congratulate your teammates, your fans, your goalie, and say how tough the opponent was and then wait until the interviewer thanks you and then go celebrate with your teammates. I know that's what I would do.

I like how Kotkaniemi is playing. I just wish he didn't use the words he did in the interview. No point helping your opponents.

But, TBH, it doesn't matter anymore now. What's done is done. Now it's all about game 7.

You are SERIOUSLY making a big deal out of nothing, its honestly a little crazy how too much youre looking into this jesus relax

Matthews' ES production numbers say that you are wrong.

Does it really say that?

Let's look at what we have...
Matthews shooting% went from 18.5% in the regular season to 3.1% in the PO and Marner went from 12.8% to 0%. This stat can be linked directly to goaltending.

Matthews shots per game went from 4.3 in the regular season to 5.3 in the PO and Marner went from 2.83 to... 2.83. So Matthews is actually shooting more and there is no change whatsoever for Marner. The Phillip's effect is non-existent here.

The production alone isn't telling that story.
Maybe you have some stats that could be attributed solely to the Danault line and not goaltending. Providing something like the Matthews line controlled zone entries plummeting or a significant change in shooting pattern (heatmap) when they face the Danault line would be a good start here.

I don't have those stats you requested, but I do think Matthews quality of chances in this series as a whole has been worse than in the regular season.

That's Danault, but it's also his linemates, Suzuki and the top 4 D. Then, as you say, Price has been likely the biggest factor.

Edit: Another potential factor for Matthews' production is the physicality. He's wrapping his wrist again like he was mid season, and I think he's playing through something caused by all the hard nosed play on him.

PK didn't jinx us against Boston and KK certainly didn't jinx us against Toronto. It's game 7 man and the Leafs will be TIGHT.
Leafs will charge hard out of the gates. Leafs are still the heavy favorites to win. They've got a great team. Habs have to keep battling, hit their skilled guys, stretch the game out, play good solid hockey and hope they get some puck luck. Should be fun!!

Brought a tear to my eye to see fans back.....I've been a lifelong Habs fan, located in SW Ontario and have made a few trips to the Bell Centre. I know how special that arena is, I'm glad for those fans that we pulled out a win..

Can't wait to see it full again. GHG
