Would LOST qualify as a guilty pleasure?

So much about that show was so bad but I enjoyed most of it week to week.

I don’t think so at all. It had *some* bad parts, but certainly not “so much of it”. It was basically THE water cooler show for 5 years and not in a reality tv/Riverdale kind of bad way.

The action movies I grew up with. Arnie, Sly, Stallone, Van Damme and even some Seagal. A lot of it is "bad" yes, but I can enjoy it on so many levels. If it's with a group of like-minded friends, even better. Pop open some beers and it's a party.

I also watch a lot of sitcoms now to pass the time during corona. The Charlie Sheen one isn't bad. Everybody Loves Raymond is good (don't get the hate). Frasier was glorious for about half of its run (although I suppose it's a touch high brow for a sitcom and doesn't fit here).

Everybody Loves Raymond was great. Not sure why anyone would hate on it. Frasier’s final few seasons are hit or miss. It got really bad at times, but still overall one of the better sitcoms I’ve watched.

It gets unbelievable amounts of hate for some reason. I think some people just dislike the goofy husband/nagging wife formula. But when it works, it works.

It might appeal more to an older crowd (over 40), so young people might think its lame. I do think Romano’s humour is very family friendly, so I think people of all ages can find it funny.

The only sitcoms I’ve ever seen my parents watch are Raymond and Frasier. I doubt they’d watch Seinfeld for example. I dunno, funny is funny to me.

Yeah, it basically rips off Spiderman's music and thematic messages from several other sci-fi/comic movies, but that's why it's a guilty pleasure.

I suppose my guilty pleasure is sci-fi and fantasy flicks (including superhero movies). There is good stuff out there but also a lot of bad and (the guilty part), I'll even watch the bad stuff. It can get really bad and I'll just laugh at it and enjoy it anyway (I might be one of the few people that liked Artemis Fowl this year). I can't do that with horror flicks though. I wish I could because there is tons of that content out there, but I can't. I just find it stupid. But put an equally bad sci-fi or futuristic fantasy flick there and I'll watch it with bells on. I also have a weakness for heist movies or con-artist flicks for some reason. Especially those with a twist and the more twists in the story, the better. And road movies. Love the road movies genre for some strange reason. Good or bad, who cares, it's a road movie.

Good mentally. I know I shouldn't feel insecure for liking something but still do.

Anime is a big one for me. I've liked it for over 20 years and still nobody in my family knows about it.

That's weird!! I mean, if it's the porn stuff, ok you might want to keep it to yourself, but the kids stuff? Might as well want to be yourself and enjoy whatever you feel like enjoying... Let's see... I think animes are f***ing dumb and that you're a grown ass man and should dedicate your precious time to Ingmar Bergman!!!:madfire:!! Can you live with that? You really should.

It seems to me that he is being himself and enjoying what he likes, or else he would've given up anime out of shame. I don't think that it's weird to have interests that family members don't know about (at least if we're talking about family that we no longer live with). I like lots of things that my family doesn't know about... like Kurosawa films. They're not really into foreign films, so why would I ever talk to them about them? Similarly, I like Carly Rae Jepsen's music, but my family has very different tastes in music, so there's no reason to bring it up. It's not that I'm insecure about my tastes. I'm just a private person who doesn't share things unless there's some reason to. I'm not one of those people who will talk your ears off about subjects that I care about but you don't.

Also, I think that there's a difference between keeping something to yourself because you're insecure and keeping it to yourself because you don't want to be rude ;).

I think you lost a sentence or two in there... He clearly said he was hiding his interest for animes because he was insecure, so not being himself around his family. And what's with Kurosawa in a "guilty pleasure" thread? If anything, your family would only be proud to learn that. I'm pretty sure you don't refrain from posting a Kurosawa clip on your Facebook page in fear of being ridiculed or look dumb to your close ones.

I was only saying f*** them. And I was being fakely rude only to prove a point: f*** me too.

Well, I was responding to you talking about keeping things to yourself. I did kind of forgot the context of the discussion and thought that you might be speaking more generally.

BTW, I do refrain from posting Kurosawa clips on Facebook... because I don't use Facebook ;).

I was only saying f*** them. And I was being fakely rude only to prove a point: f*** me too.

Oh, well, in that case, we agree! j/k

Although I avoid romantic comedies like the plague, I got hooked on Friends because of the romantic twist the authors intentionally put on the show to get the viewers addicted. They got me big time.

My gf loves Friends and I've seen the whole thing on repeat for the past 20 years. The writing is efficient, the jokes work. Joey is reheated and feels more tv-sitcomy, but might be even funnier.

In terms of guilty pleasures being things that I like that I don't want to admit... none, because who cares what other people think.

In terms of guilty pleasures being things that I liked while being fully aware they were really bad...

The main one I can think of is a British sci-fi show called Primeval.

I watch Tom Cruise's "Cocktail" at least once a year. Usually, to begin the summer. And I have Coughlin's Laws printed out and on my wall in my office at work. Slow day--hence the bumped threads.
