Guess Guentzel's next contract

Lots of talk in the cap thread today about what Guentzel should get on his next contract. Lets put some of those guesses/thoughts down in one thread, as it's always interesting to see what he does end up with vs some people's thoughts. Try to keep the spread at 500k. I mean anyone can guess 5-6m, lets try to be a little more specific.

Am going to break this down into 2 options (or guesses). One for 1-3 yr contracts, and one for 4+ yr deals. Anything under 4 years (1-4) will only buy up RFA years. Year 5+ is buying up UFA years. But I do not think Rutherford would give him a 4 yr deal that would take him to UFA.

My guess:
1-3 years, 4.75m-5.25m
4+ years, 5.5m-6m

Edit:
Giving this a little thought I actually think he goes with a short contract (2-3 yrs). That will give him some financial security, and give both parties more games to get a better idea as to a baseline.

I’ll go with 6 or 7 years at 6 mil (maybe 6.25 if it’s 7 years).

I think both parties will want term.

3 years 4.75m or 6 at 5.5

Not that I would offer that, but I would take the first one now if I was JR, and the second if I was Jake. Obviously this has a chance to rise while Jake takes all the risks while making under 1m.

He is 27 on Oct 6 2021, So if unsigned at that time is he a UFA? That would essentially give him 2 "RFA" years, not 4 as I had assumed.

6.5MM x 7. Betting on a huge year. I think 6x7 is the baseline that Ehlers set so I went up a bit from there.

When can we re-sign him? as soon as the season starts?
As soon as GMJR can figure him out in the future cap puzzle i guess?

I can see him making an offer before next PO when Guentzel's value goes up again.

I wouldn't wait that much imho though.

I'm looking at the Maatta/Dumoulin contracts as a base and add in the inflation of the cap.

4.5/5.0 for 2 years. It pays Guentzel and allows him to adjust when the new CBA kicks in. He'll be able to cash in. Of course we want him to take term for a solid cap hit that may hurt a little now and get better in the coming years, but why would you want to leave that much coin on the table. It's all in how comfortable Jake is for his future. Get through this year with a full season and he really could cash in.

I hope he does what's good for him, the rest the team will work with the wrinkles.

No. UFA/RFA is calculated as of July 1st. So on July 1st 2021, he will only be 26 yrs old... thus for the 21/22 season, he will still be a RFA. He will become a UFA on July 1st 2022 (assuming he doesn't have a valid contract in place).

We could have signed him to an extension at any time after July 1st 2018. Rutherford has said he wants to wait and see how things go (irrc).

OK. So 1 more year of ELC, then minimum 3 more until potentially UFA. Correct?

He had a 25% shooting % in playoffs 16/17 and almost 30% 17/18, so I can see why JR would want to see more.

I think 5m for 3 years, putting his next deal on the new CBA. JR will like the flexibility and lower cap hit during this window. Jake will gamble that the players win some concessions in the new CBA. I wouldn't be shocked to see maybe 5.3m for 4 years either.

That said, I think JR should do everything in his power to lock him up long term immediately.

I think Jake won’t take a short term deal. There’s probably minimal difference over the next 6-7 years in salary whether he goes a bridge deal or not.

Take the guaranteed money and when that contract is up if he’s still good he’ll still get paid.

Pretty important 1st quarter to half for Jake.
Is he gonna be at an Ehler type pace or last years 82 game sample.
That'll be the key to his contract either being in the 5's or 6/a smidge above.
