Both of these two seasons are very similar in terms of goals and assists and are two of the most dominant ever. Let's take a look at the numbers.
1981-82 50 goals in 39 games-61 goals in 51 games-87 goals in 75 games-10 hat tricks-92 goals and 120 assists for 212 points in 80 games. 92 goals, old record was 76. 120 assists, old record was 109 by himself in 80-81, 102 by Orr. 212 points, old record was 164 by he himself in 80-81, 152 by Esposito.
1983-84 50 goals in 42 games-61 goals in 51 games-87 goals in 74 games-10 hat tricks-51 points scoring streak (during that streak he had 61 goals and 92 assists for 153 points which is 3 points a game) 87 goals and 118 assists for 205 points in 74 games. If you do the math he pace through 80 games is 221 points (94 goals and 127 assists
In terms of pure offensive production, I'll take 1983-84. Although he only played 74 games in 83-84 as compared to the full 80 in 81-82, his numbers come up better when you project them through a full 80 games (in Gretzky's case it's safe to say thats accurate during his peak years). 1983-84 is slightly better to me, although thats just my opinion. Had he not had a bruised shoulder after game 52 of that terrific 1983-84 campaign, which caused him to miss 6 straight games (which Edmonton went 1-5 in) who knows what his numbers would have ammounted to.
