This year and the prior 4 years the Rangers are not only scoring less goals but also giving up more goals. So out of the last 5 years this year is the worst in both those categories. I just don't think Vignault is the right guy for the job here. He turned a good tough team into the softest team in the league. We supposedly are a puck possession team and will score more now but yet we have scored less goals then when Torts was here. Not saying I liked Torts just pointing that out. Not only that though we have managed to give up more goals also.

How many coaches are we going to oust before the organization realizes the real issue? Sather. He has no direction for this team and it's showing.

The hallmark of a true contender is 5v5 goal differential. Most of the 60 min of a hockey game is played 5v5, and teams that have the best offensive to defensive output under those conditions usually end up vying for the cup.

There are always some exceptions... 2012 LA was a bit of an anomaly but their 5v5 G/F went up an entire goal after the Carter for Johnson deal (great goal scorer for a turn style defender).

To call this team a contender is a fallacy of epic proportions. Not even close. The 2012 Rangers were definitely contenders. If you look at the top of the standings, you will see that the teams with the most points also have a considerable gap when GF v GA is concerned.

AV's Vancouver teams for years had that as well (2 dominant centers, shutdown defensemen, effective checking line forwards, and elite goaltending are part of the formula).

Most years, barring early playoff matchups, the top 7 teams in 5v5 GD usually finish in the final 4. It will change a bit this year because of the new playoff structure where two favored teams will undoubtedly meet int he 1st round, while a team like Minnesota might get a good matchup, but teams that can defend well will still win out.

The last three Stanley Cup champs all sported the best team defense in the league... that's 2011 with Boston, 2012 with LA, and 2013 with Chicago.

Getting 40 perimeter shots isn't going to win championships in this day and age. It's a shame Torts lacked people skills cause he had it right one year before the GM mismanaged contracts that off season.

Everything you listed is Sather's fault. Not AV's.

It was nice not letting in goals, but scoring goals is important too.

Well, if you discredit the first 10 games of the season in which they were a combined -20 under a new coach trying to implement an completely different system, their goal differential is actually quite good. +29 over the last 60 games. Good enough for 7th out of all 30 teams.

Yeah and that lead to a lot of wins before the olympic break, but take that in comparison to the teams that are +50-70 or so and then you have the barrier for what is a contender and not.

If you take it a step further and attribute their stumble out of the Olympic break to losing their captain and St. Louis' slow start, then they were +27 in 49 games before the break. Over an 82 game season that's +45.

I know these are just excuses that most good teams overcome, but my point is for 49 games during the middle of the season they were putting up numbers comparable to the contenders.

Absolutely... if it was last year, then yeah it be something to get excited about since it was a 48 game season.. and during the stretch you are mentioning, the team played like winners and won a lot of games.

End zone coverage isn't as bad as the 1st month, but it's still giving up high quality scoring chances from the slot and not winning enough battles for 2nd/3rd chance opportunities on the offensive end.

Does this team need all-world goaltending every night? Yes absolutely... and that's something they haven't gotten this year... but that is as much on this man on man end zone "coverage" as much as Hank having a down year.

Slow the game down for this goalie, and he is darn near unbeatable... speed it up and miss coverage.. well Hank is going to have a tough time... as would any goalie.

The way I look at from watching this season, the current iteration of the Rangers is built to play and beat the bottom half of the league, and upper echelon teams that also try and play a fast possession game.

But against the big boy teams, this team struggles, and doesn't push back physically... this will not lead to playoff success... and that's if the team makes the playoffs.
