Just watched highlights of last years nyr pens series. Painful. I can't see what anyone thought was positive from that other than Fleury and Crosby.

Phil's listed at 203, so a slim 190-195.
Blazing fast, he shall be.

I dunno....warm cookies and such have seem to be working for him so far, haha.

Glad to hear that. Still a relatively young player, but getting up there. Important to maximize your fitness level to prolong your quality/career.

Dude's got one of the best shots in the league. is one of the best/fastest skaters in the league, is in the best shape of his life™, and is going to be playing with a gigantic chip on his shoulder.

Oh, and now he's got Sidney Crosby as his center.

It's gon' be a fun season.

This still scares me in a "don't fix what isn't broken" kind of way. Considering with two of the workout studs on the team one had a stroke and the other keeps having bloodclots.

I hear you, and as Pens fans I think we have a right to be extremely paranoid based on our team's recent injury history. Still, objectively it's difficult to see a downside in a guy with Phil's reputation getting his pump on with a no-nonsense guy like Scary Gary. You have to think this will be a good thing.

Some random early September thoughts....Kessel will have a monster year with Sid; but, I think getting Fehr might turnout to be equally significant.
Partially because JR feels they mishandled Bennett, expect Sundqvist to start the year in WBS. And, I'm not sure he doesn't feel the same way about Pouliot; especially if he can find a way to fit Franson in.
JR isn't finished with roster. If he could find a way to move Scuds, Kunitz, and Lovejoy; I think he would. Again, easier said than done. If Kunitz goes, I would not be surprised to see Tlusty brought in. JR loves his vets and old Canes.
Gonchar will have a role with Pens; may not be on the ice. He will retire a Pen.

Much of Scary Gary's program is built on correct nutrition (and Fiji water) and that's something that should help Kessel improve even without training himself to death in the gym.

Indeed.
The key would be if he can find healthy foods that he likes.

Just listening to this:

http://theleafsnation.com/2015/9/3/the-steve-dangle-podcast-sep-3-2015-mirtle-2-0

Kessel stuff starts at 40min or so.
Mirtle was the guest and they talk about how rare a talent like Kessel gets traded. They mentioned Thornton and Hossa are really the only 2 in recent memory. Talk about his introvertness as well.
Mirtle said he would've never moved Kessel. Would've held on to him for a better return.

Can't express enough how much of a get this may turn out to be for JR. JR stayed patient and pounced when this guy became available.

I'm watching game 7 of the 2009 finals and two observations:
1 Jesus refs call a god damn interference penalty against the Wings. Geez Louise!
2 There was a time when Craig Adams could skate.

Mirtle is the sole Ontario-based hockey newspaper reporter I know of who's worth a damn. Good find, I'll check it out later.

Leafs fans have to be pissed.

meh. some will, some won't. honestly, we needed to move on. so 13 lbs down or not, the Leafs needed to move on, and we lost all but 1 .3 on his contract. win for us, win for you.

I hope he performs well for you. good luck next season.

I don't know if Kessel losing 13 pounds is exactly a perfect thing. Did he loose 13 pounds in fat and gain no muscle (or even worse, lose both muscle and fat)? Did he lose a great amount of fat but also add significant muscle? Just saying "He lost 13 pounds" isn't enough for me to be jumping for joy. Seeing how he worked with Scary Gary, I'd bet it was he lost a lot of fat and gained some muscle, but I'm not exactly sure.

To be fair though, 190 pounds is basically exactly the weight you want for a goal scorer who has a game based on speed. Kane is only around 177 pounds (which could easily be high, as weights usually are), and Kane and Kessel are similar players.
