When the Red Wings player went into convulsions on the bench a few years ago, that game was suspended as well. So, not unprecedented.

(But I recall the Wild-Sharks game where Foster badly broken his thigh bone. Delayed for many minutes, but continued.)

There have been at least 2 Sabres games that were stopped for many minutes due to accidents where a skate blade cut a neck: Sabres G Clint Malarchuk and Panthers D Richard Zednik. Nearly 2 decades separated the 2 incidents, yet each game had to be stopped for a while to clean up the blood on the ice.

The original comment of this being extremely rare was not in reference to games being stopped for many minutes, but a game being POSTPONED due to the incident. In the Springfield situation this year, after the MacLeod was transported to the ambulance, the game never re-started. The referee ordered the start of the second intermission early (a few minutes remained in the 2nd period), and during that intermission, the decision was made to suspend play completely, send everyone home and finish the game at a later date.
