So, it's, like, 2014-2015. Yes, we've been slow to get started (the holdout was my agent's idea), but Live Chat is now up and running again! Join us as we discuss the game, kvetch about TV commercials, and occasionally invoke ALL CAPS FOR VICTORY. :D

This thread (like the old one before it) is here to help get new chatters started, to remind everyone that we're open for a game, and (if need be) to provide a place for folks to discuss issues.

Most chat participants only join during games and other notable events (the trade deadline, the draft, Free Agent Frenzy, et cetera), but the channel is always open, so feel free to stop in anytime and start a discussion!

Below, you'll find everything you need to know to chat live with your fellow fans.
See you there!

Special thanks to macserv for writing most of the material that is used here, and for starting the channel; he can take it back anytime he likes. and hooray for his return! :D

The Basics

[fieldset=How To Join In!]
  1. Click Here to Log In! (Or if that doesn't work, try here for KiwiIRC or here for qchat instead.)
  2. Enter in your nickname, then
  3. Hit Enter or click the "Connect" button.
[/fieldset][fieldset=How To Participate]
Send messages to everyone in the chatroom by typing in the little text box at the bottom of the screen and hitting Enter when you want to send your message.

You can open a private chat conversation to someone in Live Chat by typing the following in the text box and hitting Enter:
/query <nickname>
Replace <nickname> with the nickname of the person you want to talk to. The chatroom conversation will be (temporarily) hidden, and any messages you send will now be just between you and that person.

There's a row of "buttons" across the top of your chat that you can use to switch between the chatroom and private chat conversations. The first button, "Status", can usually be safely ignored. The next button, "#cbj" is the chatroom. Any subsequent buttons are private chat conversations, and they'll be named the same as the person you're having that conversation with. New buttons are created as you open private conversations with people - OR if they open up such conversations with you!

To do an emote action (they look like this: "* Viqsi demonstrates an emote"), type the following:
/me <action text>

To leave Live Chat (why would you want to? :) ), type "/quit" and hit Enter, then close the window.

Have Fun!
[/fieldset][fieldset=The Rules (as set forth by channel owner macserv)]
  1. Keep it friendly; no personal attacks. Don't be a jerk.
  2. The channel operators decide who is being a jerk.
  3. Profanity is permitted, but rule #1 still applies.
  4. Keep the drama to a minimum. Cliff-jumping is prohibited.
  5. During gameplay, try to limit the amount of off-topic banter.
  6. Avoid pasting huge blocks of text into the chat.
[/fieldset][fieldset=The Moderators Would Like You To Know The Following]
  • If you're being a jerk (see above), a drama queen, or excessively disruptive, we will warn you.
  • If you continue to offend, we will kick you.
  • Finally, if necessary, we will ban you.
We genuinely hate having to take any of the above actions, but rest assured, they will be taken when needed.
We've got a good record with our chatters here - in six years, only two guys have had to be banned. Don't be the next! We're all hockey fans here; we exist to have fun, either because of or in spite of what's happening on the ice.

You can put those who annoy you on Ignore. If someone is irritating you but they have not earned a kick or ban from an operator, type /ignore <annoyance nickname> and they will be blocked from your sight.

Live Chat Is Not On A Delay! Spoilers abound! Watching or listening to the game via an online feed, a Slingbox, or some other similar means - or, in some cases, via a different TV provider - opens you up to the possibility of spoilers. You may see details about the game in the chat (particularly when goals are scored) before you get to see or hear them. This is impossible to police; everybody has different time delays (we've had folks with the same cable provider have different delays), and they can get to up to 30 seconds long or more for some online feeds. If you are on such a delay, and you do not wish to read about the game before you experience it yourself, you may want to look away from the chat while the clock is ticking, and stop by during commercials, time-outs, and intermissions.

Fans Of Other Teams Are Welcomed. We do not consider merely being a member of another fanbase to be an inherently bad thing (misguided, perhaps, but not bad ;) ). We have a few regulars who are Jackets fans second, and they are bound by the same rules as everyone else. However, this is primarily a Jackets fan forum, and so we expect such visitors to be upstanding representatives of their teams - refraining from hurling insults, gloating, goading, or otherwise being an irritant. Don't Be A Jerk.

Beyond The Basics

[fieldset=Name Registration (optional)]Name Registration is optional, but highly recommended. It lets you reserve your nickname so that nobody else can take it. It's also a prerequisite for permanent voice or operator privileges, should you earn such a thing.

Registration is fairly easy. You'll need a valid email address and a password (which you'll have to remember). To start the registration process, type the following once you're connected:
/msg NickServ register <password> <email>
Once you've done that, check your email and you should get a message from "Rizon Services". That email message will look something like this:
Hi,

You have requested to register the following nickname ExampleNickname.

Please type " /msg NickServ confirm ExAmPlE " to complete registration.

If you don't know why this mail was sent to you, please ignore it silently.

PLEASE DON'T ANSWER TO THIS MAIL!

Rizon administrators.

Copy that "/msg NickServ confirm ExAmPlE" line, paste it into the chat messagebox, and hit Enter, and your nickname will be registered using the password you provided.

Once you're registered, each time you connect you can "log in" with the following command:
/msg NickServ identify <password>

Registrations lapse after 90 days of inactivity! If you haven't been to Live Chat (and connected with your password!) in longer than 90 days, you'll have to re-register.
[/fieldset][fieldset=Using An IRC Client (optional)]The live chat room is actually just an IRC channel. IRC (eye-arr-sea) is short for Internet Relay Chat, and has been a popular chat method since the 80s. To use IRC, you connect to a server, and then join a "channel", which is the actual chat room.

When you join the channel using the web page at the top of this post, it loads a basic IRC "client" which connects to the server, and puts in the #cbj channel. This allows anyone to join in without much trouble, but doesn't offer any features for power users. It also requires you to keep your web browser open to stay connected.

To get more out of your IRC experience, you can download a specialized IRC client for free. There are hundreds of them out there, but the ones we've historically recommended are:
Mac: Colloquy - http://colloquy.info/
iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch - Get it on iTunes
Colloquy provides a very clean, highly customizable look and feel for IRC channels. It makes it simple to set up a connection, add a password for your registered nickname, and manage your options.
Windows: mIRC - http://www.mirc.com
mIRC is the most widely used IRC client out there. It's not the prettiest piece of software out there, but it is the most full-featured, and has become the standard-bearer for IRC chat clients across all platforms. Lots of add-ons and advice are readily available.
Linux: Konversation - http://konversation.kde.org/
Most IRC clients for Linux run on the command line, without a point-and-click interface ("irssi", for example, is an excellent text-based client). If you're looking for a Linux IRC client with nice, clean, graphical experience, here it is.
Download and install the client of your choice. Now, you'll need to create a new connection. You'll need the following information:
Server Address: irc.rizon.net
Port Number: 6667
Channel: #cbj

You'll also need your nickname, and (if you registered your nickname) your identification password.

Yeah, the included webclient seems to be giving folks fits (was fine for me when I tried, but, hey, that's how it always works). For the time being, try the Mibbit client:

Per macserv, Skraut has been promoted to Operator status "for meritorious service in the offseason."

Oh, and there's a game on. No video, but Bob and Jody are doing a fantastic job already, so come on in!

IF YOU'RE NOT AT THE NAT - GET IN THE CHAT

For my fellow operator-type folks in the chatroom... remember how I used to talk about converting my little topic management helper script into a op-accessible bot?

Well, my internet connection exploded about the same time the game did last night, so I found myself with some free time, and...

It's on right now. :)

It took twenty minutes for him to notice because we were evil, but deetman is now a half-op in the chatroom - promoted on the basis of his ability to advise our other ops how to do their jobs. ;)

Congrats, deetman! :)
