Kuz is such a douche to try that in a regular season shootout, not to mention on a rookie goalie.

Kane does the same thing. I don't know how you legislate a crap thing from being less crappy. Like, here's a gimmicky comparison of skills between 6 people...now...don't do anything gimmicky...

I really say, have 5 minutes of 4v4 and 5 minutes of 3v3 or 10 of 3v3 and leave the ties and keep overall point availability at 2 points. So 1 point each for the tie and 2 points for a winner.

Remember the stupid spin-o-rama goals on Marty that the Islanders pulled? It was in like his second to last game as a Devil.

I don't even remember who pulled the moves, but one of them was probably Frans Nielsen.

They wound up banning those from the shootout not too many years later.

I'm not sure if I blame Kuz too much on doing that, as annoying as it was to watch. I don't think players much care for the shootout either and they're probably just bored and feel like trying something like that to make it feel more exciting and worthwhile for themselves.

Extend Haula!

I think he’d take a paycut if he can get a bit of term. This is his seventh NHL-team, and I remember reading he’d prefer to settle somewhere. If his wife’s BFF is moving somewhere close, I wouldn’t be surprised if he values length over aav. 3 x 1.8M, and some kind of NTC.
I'm more than sold at two years at that cap hit.

3 years though? Eh.

They banned it in 2014-15.

The stuff under the spoiler continues with this quote where Rosen makes a correct point (coaches argued the forward movement rule endlessly with these) and then some meaningless ones.

I mean “slowing the shootout down” reads pretty funny now since most skaters just go into a fugue state in SO now. I doubt anyone sees a much speed or excitement in them at this point.

I'm not crazy about ties but, I'd rather have 4 or 5 ties than shootouts. Live 3 on 3 and hate to see them end. They already mitigate going to a shootout. For me the shootout had some fun moments but, has jumped the shark. Just my thoughts.

I don’t think that it is. Enough players spoke out against it at the all star break. I think the NHL looks to do away with it this off-season.

The NHL might wait until the next CBA negotiations and then give the players what they want then.

So I don’t see the shootout surviving past 2025-26.

I really hope you’re right about it’s much deserved demise coming sooner than that though.

I never understood why ties were such anethma to fans...especially now that soccer's gaining in popularity by the year and ties are perfectly acceptable there. I'd rather have a tie than suffer the fate of the Rangers in 2010 or whatever year it was they lost a shootout to the Flyers with a playoff berth riding on it.

Hell 2014 was bad enough when the 0-13 shootout record cost us a last-gasp playoff berth in the Lou era.

Older fans like me would be at risk of dying from older age waiting for a goal in a soccer OT.

It is amazing how quickly we've MOWED through the 60's, 70's and 80's in points.

Probably pretty much every 10 other than maybe the 40's or wherever we were during the December slump.

I clearly remember hitting either 60 or 61 in the MLK day matinee in San Jose, which was our only other shootout win. I don't even think we had quite 70 by the all star break/bye week.

Or, and here's a wild and crazy idea, maybe change the points system so teams actually try to go for it in regulation or OT? But no, we must have loser points to make the standings look closer!
I don't mind the current points system. Like the incentive of going after the extra point in OT and taking some risk to do so. Creates excitement and people pay good money so give them some excitement! The shootouts are just getting silly and hard to watch. I'm 45 and about 45 pounds over weight. I can coast down the ice and get lucky and beat a goalie with deke or wrist shot. Maybe 1 out of 100 times but, I could do it lol. How about we have a shot clock on the shooters and make them skate in like someone is behind them. 3 on 3 hockey you can't just hide or glide or you'll foolish. Still takes defense turning into offense. Still hockey to me.

Yeah just go to 10 minute 3on3 and then you’ll have legitimately like 2 ties a year

That’s fine, everyone can cope. Plus teams will really go for it in OT.
I think the concern is that there will be games where neither team will actually go for it and settle for the tie.

I'm fine with leaving the shootout as a last resort after a ten minute OT, but only because I know it will only happen like 10% of the time since you're extending the 3v3.

Even better would be to make wins worth 3 points, OTW 2 points, and OTL 1 point. But I don't think that will ever happen.

Ties are garbage, and in a low-scoring environment they were much worse. There were 170 ties in the NHL in 2004 out of 1230 games, that's basically 1 out of every 7 games ending in a tie. The NHL could go back to having ties, but I can't imagine it ever happening - the shootout is better. It means the end of the game wasn't someone killing the clock for ten seconds.

Yet instead, we saw a team (The Caps) killing the clock for 30 seconds CONSTANTLY to try and get the game to the Shootout.
