Ansar Khan: Red Wings coach Mike Babcock says Johan Franzen looked good at center and is club's 'X Factor'

DENVER – Perhaps the key to getting Johan Franzen to move his feet on a consistent basis and be more involved in the game is to play him at center.

That's where Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock used the big forward in Friday's 3-2 overtime victory at Colorado. And both were pleased with the results.

“I thought Mule was fantastic in the middle, dominated the faceoff circle, really played well, went head-to-head against (Matt) Duchene all night long and was very good,'' Babcock said.

Babcock paired Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg together in an effort to energize the team following Thursday's 4-2 loss at Phoenix. He had Franzen center the second line with Valtteri Filppula and Gustav Nyquist.

Franzen, who won 8-of-13 faceoffs, enjoyed the change of pace.

“Little bit more involved in the game,'' Franzen said. “Got some more pucks, a lot more skating, so it was fun.

“Try something new and get a little boost maybe.''

There's really no need to state it, but here goes, this is a MUST win game for the Wings. It seems like each and every remaining game is for the most part, but with St Louis a point behind the Wings, a regulation win would be really big for the club.

Yeah, my bad. I know it's Roman Polak, but forgot to change the Kevin in Kevin Shattenkirk to Roman Polak.

Nice response though

I think wings lose this one, jetlagged and blues are a tough opponent, physically speaking... I say, 3-1 loss.

I don't think jet lag is ever a reasonable excuse with the way these guys travel and how much they've traveled in their careers.

As everyone already said, Must win!
I don't remember us playing that well on NBC Sunday afternoon games even when we were dominate.

At least next year when we move to East we will be playing a lot of Saturday night games (Hockey night in Canada) against TOR/MON/OTT instead.

It would be REALLY nice to keep these ******** in the 8th seed so Chi and them can mutually destroy themselves in a 7 game war ... then we can take Anaheim or Vancouver in the first round.

They're selling the new Winter Classic jerseys at the Joe. Gotta say I wish they didn't say Detroit across the front, but they're still nice.

I think I am happy with a point here. I agree with you that it is a must win, but realistically a point is not too bad.
