The Penguins return home to take on the Buffalo Sabres at 7:00 PM.

Doors open at 5:30 PM.

The game will be available to watch on SportsNet Pittsburgh locally, ESPN+ out-of-market, and on the radio in the Penguins app and 105.9 the X.

The FIRST 10,000 FANS will receive a Sidney Crosby bobblehead, presented by PPG.

Tonight's game is presented by PPG.

Team Records: PIT (19-14-4) BUF (16-19-4)

The Sabres are 2-2-1 in their last five games played, and 8-10-3 on the road in total. When scoring first, Buffalo is 12-2-1. Casey Mittelstadt leads the team in assists (22) and points (33). Jeff Skinner (16) leads the team in goals. The Sabres have the 27th-best power play (14.2%), and they have given up seven shorthanded goals this season.

Game Notes

Erik Karlsson’s 39 points (14G-25A) and Kris Letang’s 33 points (6G-27A) against the Sabres rank first and second, respectively, among active defensemen.

After his three-point performance in Boston on Thursday night (1G-2A), Sidney Crosby has eclipsed the 40-point mark for the 18th time in his career, a feat that only 24 players in NHL history have accomplished. He and Alex Ovechkin (18) are the only active players with 18 or more 40-point campaigns.

Drew O’Connor tied his single-game career high with two points on Thursday night (1G-1A), giving him five points (3G-2A) in his last six games. In doing so, he also tied his single-season career high in goals (5), and established a new career high in points (13) on the season.

Reilly Smith has 20 points (10G-10A) in 27 career games against the Sabres, which includes 11 points (6G-5A) in his last 11 games versus them.

Pittsburgh has been playing consistent hockey over the last month, picking up points in nine of its last 11 games (8-2-1). Since this stretch began on Dec. 12, only two teams have accumulated more points than the Penguins (SEA, WPG: 18).

The Penguins have points in seven of their last eight games (6-1-1) and are averaging 4.00 goals per game over this span. Since this stretch began on Dec. 18, the Penguins have scored three or more goals in all but one of the contests, and no team in the NHL has scored more goals than Pittsburgh’s 32.

Marcus Pettersson is set to play in his 400th career NHL game tonight. Pettersson made his NHL debut with the Anaheim Ducks on February 15, 2018, in a 3-2 win in Chicago against the Blackhawks. The 27-year-old Swedish blueliner has 117 career points (10G-107A) through 399 games. Drafted 38th overall in the 2014 NHL Draft, he will become the 24th player and just the fourth defenseman from his draft class to appear in 400 NHL games. Pettersson also has the third-highest career plus/minus (plus-69) of all players drafted in 2014 and is in the topthree on the Penguins in several categories this season. He ranks third in TOI/GM, averaging 22:34 for Pittsburgh this season, and is first in plus/minus at plus-18.

Erik Karlsson is tied for the team lead among Pittsburgh defensemen with 26 points (6G-20A) in 37 games. The Swedish blueliner has notched 787 points (184G-603A) in 957 career games, and is one point shy of surpassing fellow countrymen Borje Salming for sole possession of the 19th-most points in NHL history among defensemen, and second all-time among Swedish-born defensemen.

Jake Guentzel leads Pittsburgh in assists (25) and points (43), and ranks second in goals (18) behind teammate Sidney Crosby (22). Guentzel has eight points (4G-4A) over his last five games, which includes three multi-point efforts. Overall, his 10 multi-point games lead Pittsburgh.

Guentzel enters tonight’s game two goals shy of hitting the 20-goal plateau for the seventh-consecutive season. When he reaches this mark, he will become just the seventh player in franchise history to have seven or more 20-goal campaigns with Pittsburgh.

Kris Letang notched his third three-point effort in his last six games on Thursday night in Boston (3A), giving him 12 points (1G-11A) in his last six games. Since this stretch began on Dec. 23, no NHL defenseman has recorded more points, and Letang is second overall in league scoring.

Sidney Crosby enters tonight’s game with points in 20 of his last 25 games (13G-19A) versus Buffalo. He has recorded at least one point in 49 of 58 career games played against them, while his 82 points (28G-54A) are the most he’s tallied against any non-Metropolitan Division opponent. Crosby enters tonight’s game with the sixth-highest career points-per-game average versus the Sabres (min. 20 GP).

SEALBound's Tips to Win:
1. Powerplay. Use it to score goals. Move your feet. If you make a pass, put the puck in a position so that the recipient of the pass can take a shot. Get traffic in front of the net.
2. Goaltending. Don't do whatever you did against Washington or Boston.

That's it. Score on PPs and get average goaltending and we should win.

SEALBound's Players to Watch:
Penguins
:
Letang vs Karlsson. This season, we've seen a back-and-forth between the two for the title of Penguins' best man. Each of them has had high highs and low lows. Offensive spurts and defensive gaffs. With Graves moving to the third pairing and Joseph moving up, it will be interesting to see how Karlsson reacts. That said, there is no promise that POJ is even in the lineup. Ludvig could easily (and probably should) take that 2LD slot.

Puustinen. While playing great, he seems to be cooling a bit. With DOC and Eller as linemates, we can expect to see a drop in offensive output. Can he do enough to push the play both with and without the puck to continue this nice little run? We shall see.

Sabers:
Thompson. Dude was lighting it up last year and was a surefire bet to score against us. This year, not so much. Was last year a flash in the pan for him? We shall see.

The Burgh
Ludvig could easily (and probably should) take that 2LD slot.

That might be interesting -- SOMEBODY has to play next to Karlsson, and although Ludvig is hardly a 2nd-pair NHL defenseman he's far more suited to that role than POJ ever will be. If Graves could ever overcome his gaffes, he'd be fine there.

Ludvig at least understands his job isn't to make stupid plays (but he sometimes does anyway, given his near-total lack of NHL experience) and to actually play defense, clear the crease and compete along the boards with some degree of success.

It's a moot point; he's almost certainly not getting that chance.

Of course this goalie has career games against the Pens lol…

“The Sabres are scheduled to start goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen. In 18 games this season, Luukkonen, has a 7-8-2 record, a 3.13 goals against averaged, an .892 save percentage and one shutout.

Throughout his career, Luukkonen has played the Penguins in three games and posted a 1-2-0 record, a 2.71 goals against averaged and .922 save percentage.”

Because WBS has too many veterans, Pitlick has a cap hit that makes it extremely challenging to recall him, and he's ultimately the same kind of player as Nylander.

He's redundant.
There is no such thing as redundancy in a lineup. You call-up what you need.
The team's in the bottom half in scoring in the league.

Although that's true with his cap hit being slightly over the relief they get when sending someone else down. Not sure why they signed him then, if he had no chance.

The good news is POJ and Ludvig are both young. A lot of folks weren't sure about Pettersson at age 23/24, especially once he got the new contact.

Now? This team would be lost without him.

Defensemen need time to develop. I'd like to see where POJ and Ludvig end up.
POJ has the tools to be a very effective defenseman in this league. That skating could take him a long way if he figures out the rest of his game.

Ludvig has less tools but he does have a style of play that you don't see a lot anymore in the NHL. He could carve out a niche as a physical dman if he can keep the rest of his game good enough.

They didn't sign him. They took him back as part of the Karlsson trade, likely to make the number of contracts work.

And redundancy is absolutely an issue. You need balance, guys who can play different ways. The Pens have plenty of finesse wingers, including several who are ahead of Pitlick on the depth chart.

Balance is worthless if the guys you assign roles to aren't good at carrying them out. At that point you're better off just targeting the weaknesses.

You assess the state of your team. If you need offense, you bring offense. If you need defense, you bring defense. If you need goaltending, you get a goalie.

You don't fill checkboxes based on a template you had in July. You adapt to the situation.

Pitlick is 26 and in his fourth organization. Nashville, Minnesota and Montreal couldn't find a spot for him. Guentzel, Rust, Rakell, Smith, Puustinen, DOC, Zohorna, and Nylander are all deservedly ahead of him when it comes to top nine winger spots.

Combine that with the fact that his cap hit is $400k more than Puustinen, Zohorna and Nylander on a team that is inches away from the cap ceiling, as well as the fact that WBS has to scratch veterans on a nightly basis because it has too many, and you have a reason to make this trade.

This isn't that complicated.

He's a career 1.80 5v5 P/P60. That's tops among our fringe players. That's carried over with him leading Wilkes in scoring.
He was never given a chance here.
Yeah, his defense is crap, but that's not a prio right now.

The minor difference in AAV is regrettable. But I don't think he would have gotten a chance anyway, even if he made minimum. It's not this coach's type of player. It took two injuries in the top-six to finally get Puustinen up here. Fortunately he scored well, so now he'll actually get a chance in the bottom-six. That's the only route to establishing yourself here as a scoring Forward.

Maybe relying on a single rate stat isn't an ideal method of evaluating players...

Andrew Ebbett was almost a point per game player in over 300 games in the AHL. He scored .30 points per game in 224 career games in the NHL.

Some guys just aren't cut out to be NHL regulars.

I wonder if they want to sign Puljujarvi and they won't more contract slots too. Pitlick is whatever anyways.
They were at 48 contracts prior to this trade. Max is 50. Most GMs like to have 2-3 open spots in case of a trade. Signing Pool Party would bring them back to 48. Only Vegas and San Jose have more players under contract.
