The problem with that call is that if the avs player doesn't trip and put himself in a vulnerable position, it's not even a penalty.

So you give a major and a game for something that the offending player has no control over.

I feel like there have been hits that were worse than that this year that were not called major penalties. You have a major and an ejection and that's a double whammy.

If the Sharks were a team that was looking to be a playoff team I'd be much more angry about the call than I am currently am. I don't think that it should be a major based on the precedents but it was foolish of Macdonald to put himself in a situation where he could be penalized for that.
