ok, if anyone wants to play....

starting in 1976, Earth puts together a team for a clean and recognizable game of hockey vs aliens

9 forwards, 4 defensemen, 1 goalie

everyone that year is healthy, whether its Orr or Kharlamov or anyone else who was prime but dealing with injuries.

IM interested in seeing what you pick, and im trying to learn so im not going to post mine until i read some and adjust.

Then, we also played them in 1987, 1998, 2009, and 2020

looking forward to some lists!

Just gonna throw out a 1976 roster and see what sticks... I haven't given this much thought just yet:

Kharlamov - Petrov - Mikhailov
Hull - Esposito - Lafleur
Barber - Clarke - Leach

Orr - Potvin
Park - Salming

Dryden

I'm assuming you want players in their actual positions and not six centermen, etc.

It was a hard choice not to include Vasiliev. He may actually belong there on the second pairing, I'm just not sure.

edit: forgot I could have a 3rd forward line, rearranged things a bit

i was wondering about vasiliev, too.

i would say, only in my view, that three real centermen are a must, but it would kill me to see a center moved to the wing.... i feel that usually works out fine, but its up to each poster, really

ok - im happy with Vasilevsky in goal, i agree with @TheDevilMadeMe about Brodeur in 09. he was the most solid goalie of the time, and this was a year before Thomas had an unreal statistical year.

Hasek, no question.

now, ive never been a Fuhr fan, there were no great euros in 87... Hextall won the vez, but.... i mean, with xray hindsight glasses we know that the young Roy is all about the big game......

76 is toughest for me. Dryden is The Guy and won the Vez, but didnt he get the boot in the CC?
Tretiak is the other guy, but they bombed pretty hard?
Holocek is the darkhorse guy, and he flat out dominated the worlds, but then got yanked for Dzurilla. This is the only meeting that i was too young to have a feel for the time itself...

No to both questions. Dryden had off season knee surgery, so unavailable for '76 Canada Cup. Tretiak played fine in CC but the Soviets didn't bring full compliment of players. Kharlamov was injured, and the rest of his line, Petrov & Mikhailov stayed home too, as did '72 Summit leaders Yakushev and Shadrin, and their linemate Anisin. So USSR's top two lines from Summit Series not involved in inaugural Canada Cup.

would Holocek or Novy be on anyone’s radar for 76?

Goaltender in 1976 was really tough. I definitely considered Holecek; the downside to him is that he wasn't great in very limited games versus NHL players. Of course, Dryden wasn't the best in his international games either. If you said 1975, Parent would be the easy choice, but 1976 was the year he only played 11 games, and was never the same as he was before the injury. I know you said "assume no injuries," but I guess a prime-ending injury is a little different to me than Brodeur's injury in 2009, when he still had one more great season left in him afterwards. I don't think there's a wrong answer this year between Dryden, Holecek, Tretiak, Parent (depending on how you view his injuries), or even Esposito.

Did not consider Novy. I don't think he has a case. One-way player, playing a really deep position (center). Perreault, Ratelle, and Maltsev didn't even make my team. I mean, I guess it wouldn't be totally crazy to take Novy over Petrov in a vacuum, but Petrov with the chemistry just seems easy.

The Czechoslovakian forward I did consider was Jiri Holik - fine two-way LW - the #1 LW on the original leftwing lock team. But I'm not sure he's good enough vs Bill Barber to make up for Barber's chemistry with Clarke.

Holocek yes, but I'd like to see more of his actual play first. I'm not a fan of Dryden or Tretiak so it was pretty wide open for me. I could maybe be convinced in his favour. Didn't consider Novy.

Why constitutes "clean" and "recognizable" in 1976 and why the need for this qualification?

because, in the past in threads like this, people have gone down that lane of thinking. Dressing a team of goons under the assumption that the aliens will be intimidated, or asking how big the ice is.
i thought id nip that in the bud right off the bat

I think some of the team will goon it up anyways, especially after the probing they had to endure.
