Finland has produced a number of talented goaltenders in recent years. Widely seen as the top goaltending prospect in this year’s NHL Draft, Topias Leinonen has been playing in the JYP system. He played 21 games in the Finnish Under-20 league this year. Leinonen put up a 9-10 record with a 2.28 goals-against-average and a .916 save percentage behind one of the weaker teams in that league. He also made four appearances for the big club, playing in the SM Liiga, Finland’s top men’s league. Unfortunately, he struggled against men, putting up an 0-1-2 record with a 5.02 goals-against-average and an .825 save percentage. Leinonen has a short stint in the Mestis, as he was loaned to KeuPa HT. He went 1-1 with a 3.15 goals-against-average and an .861 save percentage.

KA is really clueless. He literally has no idea what he is doing in net.

Portillo is definitely a goner.

Maybe this kid is in AHL in 4 years.

Wonder what the aggression on this pick was. Casey, Warren, and Havelid all available as good D prospects. We have a slew of late round picks we may have been able to move our 3rd rounder up with to grab this guy. Oh well they must really like something about this kid.

Leinonen will probably be ready in 4-6 years, how is he connected to Portillo or Levi at all? We also do not know Adams' conversations with Portillo.

It is connected only if you are listening to the local Buffalo sports broadcast. I’ve made the mistake of wasting 45 minutes of my life listening to those tool bags this morning and this was what they were going on about. They honestly don’t understand that it can take until a goalie is 25 years old before there regular. Or that it takes five years from being drafted to be any sort of contributor. They just kept going on about what this meant for Portillo.

We need to hire a person who just deals with all things goalie because Adams is an unmitigated disaster in all things goalie related

Just a massive reach. Zero reason to do this. Even if you have him scouted as your BPA for some reason you’d have to entertain a trade down. 30-80 spots higher than others had him ranked! For a guy that has a super long trajectory? Sheesh

This feels like Terry Pegula called Kevyn Adams and told him to draft a goalie there no matter what

And in the Sabres dev system for goalies, usually when they are pending UFAs. :D

For perspective -- Seattle took a goalie in the 2nd round as well.

I'm betting KA and company had some information that this Leinonen kid was going at some point in the 2nd and had him on a similar level as some other prospects that us amateurs are discussing.

Since we need goalies, KA jumped.

Where is the guarantee that it would not be taken away after our second? Especially if he is rated as the best goaltender in the draft.

Ya

Or ya know what ever other unrelated and random thought you want to tie to this pick, like blaming the judges breakfast for a ruling you didn’t like
