Stevens wasn't awarded in a trade. He was awarded as compensation because the Blues signed Shanahan from the Devils.

St. Louis apparently offered Curtis Joseph, Rod Brind'Amour & two picks but the Devlis was only interested in Stevens and he was given to them by an arbitrator.

Not following you on this one MXD... Its my understanding that he was notified to report to an enlistment office in 1941 but was rejected for service for physical reasons having broken an ankle in 1940 while playing hockey in the Quebec Senior League that hadnt healed properly. Earlier he'd quit school at 16 (came from a large family of 7, needed the income) and was working as an Apprentice Machinist with his father, then tried to enlist yet again as an "Army Machinist" however as he lacked a High School Diploma; the military once again rejected him.... so.... rather than knife fighting Nazi's or working in vital industry, he took his beaten & battered body, dragging his busted up ankle behind him like Quasimodo along Rue Sainte-Catherine to the Forum (through 6' snowdrifts in a whiteout - minus 40) and joined the Montreal Canadiens... where... he proceeded to lay waste to the entire league.... So no, no trickery or chicanery going on... just the illogical meanderings of the military and what constituted an acceptable recruit.

... Had be deemed fit for service by the CF (a 3rd party), then he almost certainly wouldn't have become The Rocket.

Hard to say... but of even more import, the Canadiens were in desperate financial straights coming out of the Depression & through the early War Years, nearly sold a couple of times to US interests. It was the arrival of Dick Irvin Sr. and ultimately Rocket Richard that turned things around for them. So one has to wonder had he not been rejected for service, would the Habs' have even survived? He truly was a Messiah in many ways for that franchise, the NHL in Quebec. Pretty deep waters when you really get into it, understand the full depths & gravity of what he meant to the franchise, the game itself, the fans.
