Signed. People should be able to enjoy the game and the events surrounding it. Having the winner of the Voice sing any anthem goes contrary to the general enjoyment.

I don't think I'm even going to watch the game if Rancourt is not performing.

I don't think it's really going to matter to the seven people who don't mute or turn off the TV when the anthems are sung.

Now NBC has denied permission for the City of Boston to have a Winter Classic viewing party in Copley Square

Mayor Martin J. Walsh’s plan to host a televised public viewing of the NHL Winter Classic in Copley Square on New Year’s Day has been canceled due to a dispute over broadcast rights.

On Monday, city officials said they had partnered with the NHL to live stream the Bruins-Canadiens game, which will be played at Gillette Stadium on Jan. 1, on a big-screen TV in Copley Square. The free event was to be part of the city’s First Night/First Day festivities.

But on Tuesday, TD Garden officials notified City Hall that NBC will not grant Boston the broadcast license needed to make the event possible, according to Walsh spokeswoman Laura Oggeri. Before receiving that news, city officials had been “under the impression that all the logistics had been finalized,†she said.

In a one-sentence joint statement in response to inquiries from the Globe, the NHL and NBC said that “public viewing gatherings for nationally televised regular-season games are not permissible under NHL media-rights policies.â€

Why do you do this to us Gary Bettman?

Seriously - you would think NBC would love to have a crowd shot of fans watching in Boston and the NHL has allowed viewing parties in Canada with mixed results

I agree with Fenway on this one. Anthems may be an outdated tradition but will probably stay with us. Rene and Ginette (if possible) would properly grace the occasion.

NBC / Bettman in their pursuit of "popularity" "hipness" "new American fans" and corporate slickness are often disregarding long time traditions of the NHL and of the game. This "cross pollination" between The View, a "pop" show and the "Classic" is crass commercialism.

As for NBC not allowing the viewing party, it boggles the mind.

I always enjoyed the Boston travelling fans at the forum, they used to have a corner section there and always had a lot of fun!!

I think the problem was time constraints.

If Rene were to sing they would have to plan an additional 45 minutes for his endless fist pumps and they just couldn't afford to give him all that time.

Personally I couldn't give less of a **** about the anthems. I wish they'd just drop them all together.

More or less my stances. I've long felt the anthems are an antiquated tradition, never mind the fact half the singers teams pick can't even sing well. I dick around on my computer during anthems, so I don't really care who sings it.

My guess is paranoia fuels this decision. Montreal and Boston are such hated rivals, I could actually see NBC afraid of broadcasting a riot despite how absurd the notion is over a regular season game. Another theory is neither wants to air a dejected crowd if Boston were to lose because they somehow believe it will turn viewers away.

I don't even know why anyone cares about these stupid, boring, overrated outdoor games. I hope it gets rained out.

On principle if Boston fans are for it, I have to costanza it.

But NBC taking Jordan to sing the anthems? Meh. My guess is that it's to ensure he doesn't end up like Elliot Yamin. I'm not sure the anthems are in his wheel house because it's hard to imagine a Sam smith Adele anthem mashup. Plus the whole thing is supposed to have a throwback vibe, who wants a guy no one knew about 6 months ago?

And Geanette only does the playoffs I'm pretty sure. Rancourt is what he is. If you want old school nbc should hire Charles Prevost-lint on to needle the habs from the very start.

Sing a random national anthem along with a slide show to promote a better understanding of other counties and cultures.

This is really respectful for all the people who lost their lives for their country.

brb, let's drop our national anthems. No need to be proud of our country.

The Voice singer should be better than Diamond or Donolo, except in the attractiveness to many males department. It has been a while since I watched The Voice, but their winners aren't that bad at all.

This petition is getting lots of attention by the media. Wouldn't be surprised if it ends up working.

Is this sarcasm? I can't even tell. How is this even a real issue

A local TV station says the Governor of Massachusetts is 'disappointed' by NBC's decision.

Legendary TD Garden singer Rene Rancourt won’t get to sing the national anthem at the Winter Classic on New Year’s Day and, frankly, it’s outrageous. NBC decided against letting Rancourt sing the anthem on the national TV broadcast, the NHL announced Tuesday, instead choosing to promote the winner of “The Voice†— a show that airs on their network. NESN’s Jack Edwards expressed his disappointment with NBC on “The Instigators†following the Boston Bruins’ loss to the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday. He isn’t the only one, either: A petition started Tuesday to allow Rancourt to sing the national anthem received over 1,000 signatures in just a few hours. Check out Edwards’ take on the situation in the video above.

What do people who fought in the army/whatever have to do with hockey?

This kind of reasoning is why France has become what it is now and why Canada is about to follow the same path.

It's about patriotism and being proud of where you live/where you're from. It's something the Americans have and that we don't have. The National Anthems have their place in every sportive event. It's part of our heritage, and disregarding it is a lack of respect for those who did all they could so we could enjoy the privileges and the rich heritage we have.

The NHL makes it an official policy for coaches to wear a poppy around November 11th every season even though the US does not have that tradition like Canada and the UK

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=505583

And it's all fine. It's just basic respect to our ancestors and towards what they gave us. Same with the National Anthems. I can't even believe some would want those to be removed.

I disagree. I don't think there's a need at all to sing a song before playing a game.

Neither one of us will change the other's mind. That is fine.

Not signed.

I would assume the winner of the Voice can actually sing, unlike Rene & Ginette who should have both retired 20 years ago.

Also people who are whining about national anthems here on this internet board: I would suggest not actually saying that in public, you will make yourself look foolish and small in the eyes of others. Complaining about ceremonial patriotic displays is unnecessarily divisive, accomplishes nothing, and will not make you many friends or help your career.

I've never seen anyone care more about the national anthems than Fenway. I agree with those who want them dropped from all sporting events.

You sure you are actually a hockey fan? Fenway buys his tickets... sits down... waits patiently... listens to the glorious national anthems... then heads home. :sarcasm:
