As someone whos played rugby and did the kicks i never understood why pro rugby players "point" the ball at the uprights. Meaning from the tee in rugby, the point of contact seems to be the heel or toe of the ball as opposed to the "body" of the ball like in football.

I always kicked football style and was sucessfull in rugby. Anyone have some insight here?

It has to so with the shape of the ball.
Rugby ball is more rounded on it tip and you can control it better kicking it that way. Ive seen people kick a rugby ball they way you describe, but only at the club level. A professional would need much finer control of the ball. I would also guess you can exert more force on the ball by kicking a smaller area, but I'm no scientist.
