Riddell was 81 and had been one of the Flames co-owners since 2003. RIP Mr. Riddell.

Canadian business titan and Calgary Flames co-owner Clay Riddell dies | CBC News

In 2006 Riddell was inducted into the Alberta Business Hall of Fame, and in 2008 he was named an officer of the Order of Canada for his volunteer work and philanthropy.

Riddell donated a $10-million Cdn endowment to the University of Manitoba, his alma mater, to create the Faculty of Environment, Earth, and Resources. The school has a scholarship in his name.

And in 2013 he and his family donated $15 million to the Alberta Children's Hospital to create a children's chronic pain rehabilitation centre in the name of his late wife, Vi, who worked at the hospital as a nurse for 30 years.

The library at Mount Royal University is named after Riddell, who contributed to its construction.
In 2010, he was a founding supporter of the Riddell Graduate Program in Political Management at Carleton University in Ottawa.

Calgary, Alberta
Whenever the new arena subject comes up there is an inevitable chorus of what have the billionaire owners of the Flames ever done for the city. And then I remember men like Mr. Riddell. RIP Mr. Riddell. Thank you for being you and such a great Calgarian, Albertan, and Canadian.

Not to steer the conversation away from him, but people also ignore how hard the recent recession hit oil tycoons. In the article, it talks about how Riddell's net worth is 1/3 of what it was at it's peak.

Hopefully whoever inherits his shares doesn't decide to sell the shares to Murray Edwards. As far as I'm concerned Edwards owns too much of the team as it is.

When people think Calgary ownership Murray Edwards is the first guy to come to mind. And that chorus is more or less right in that scenario. But the ownership group has some really good people too and Ridell was one of him. The money he's given to hospitals and universities is crazy, despite losing a billion dollars when oil crashed in 2014

RIP
