Flame Suit On: What about colored ice?

Does anyone know of a HD recording of a game on a non-white ice surface? I think it'd be pretty jarring, but am curious what it'd look like.

Most TV's today aren't designed to show hockey well. Asking a TV to show mostly white color with a small, high velocity moving black puck results in terrible picture quality and terrible motion quality. This is one of the reasons the infamous glowpuck was created. It's even true with players, as the dark jerseys/skates moving across an all-white background look muted in color, and light jerseys have different but similar issues. With an all-white background, you also notice artifacts like banding and other things a lot more. Basically, TV quality sucks for hockey compared to every other sport, primarily due to the white playing surface. I'm just really interested if this has been done before.

What combo would be better for viewing than black on white?

It’s a tough one for sure. Logically black and white should be as distinct as can be. I could try to justify black on green, blue or red but that argument would probably not hold.

Nothing 4k HDR wouldn’t fix.

Let’s start with having both teams wearing dark sweaters whenever possible, if a team has the same colours then wear white. When the leafs wore the all white uniforms for their last outdoor game it was an abomination

Did they actually play a game on this? Looks like nhl94 come to life.

They tried it for a couple of AHL games during the 2005 lockout.

USATODAY.com - Buffalo arena trying light blue ice in experiment for TV

Actually it's kind of funny how closely their thought process mirrored that in the OP of this thread:

It is designed to make the game more friendly for television, particularly high-definition TV.
"HDTV's resolution is like 10 times what regular television is," Sabres managing partner Larry Quinn said. "I've got to believe that a color will show up so much better than just white. If you think about it, even art galleries aren't using white walls anymore."

It was at a November meeting with NHL officials on another topic that the league's NBC contract came up and the fact that most of the screen in a hockey broadcast is taken up by white. When a color change was suggested, Quinn went back to team graphic artists, who decided on the shade Pantone 2975.

TBH this is probably one of those things that if we were to start professional hockey brand-new in 2018 with no history, would be considered a very good idea. But because of the culture and ingrained visual branding of the event, it's really hard to change.

Ok, so even more background on this idea. It took me a few minutes to find the info because I've heard about it but never saw images.

When color TV broadcasts were first introduced in the 1966 Stanley Cup Finals, the NHL realized it had a problem. Big TV lights caused a glare off the ice, which saturated the TV screen and made the players and (especially) the puck disappear for viewers at home.

The solution: paint the ice blue instead of white.

Apparently the experiment only lasted 2 games and the Cup was awarded on white ice a week later. But it's true, the NHL actually has played games on blue ice for the specific purpose of creating a better TV viewing experience.
