Odd thread halfway though a game in an 11-3 season. But yes, there’s reasons to question Holland’s work thus far.

Sadly, like Chia, the damage is already done. This was his summer to make us a cup contender. He didn't. He improved our offence from elite to molten hot. He forgot about D, G and bottom 6.

Holland guys for offseason where chia contracts all but gone and with cap space:

Hyman has been tremendous!
Yam is earning his 1 million or so
RNH resigns was outstanding

Shore has done nothing
Barrie has been disapointing (good last night and he has points)
Keith started well but is struggling
Ceci started well but is struggling
Smith is not around
Foegele is struggling
Ryan is under 10 minutes a night for his last 3 games
Perlini?
Scevior?

Now add in Turris and Kassian from previous offseasons. A lot of gambles aren't working. What is working is that beautiful beautiful top 6. replacing Kahun with Hyman was very good!

If I were to list our 10 best players so far this season I'd say (not in any particular order):
  1. McDavid
  2. Drai
  3. RNH
  4. JP
  5. Nurse
  6. Bouch
  7. Hyman
  8. Ceci
  9. Koski
  10. Yam

8 of them were Oilers before Holland got here.

Nejdolkovic, Vanecek and Vladar all acquired for a 3rd round pick this offseason.

Since Stevie Y took over Detroit.. they got Greiss and Ned in net.
Since Holland took over Edmonton... Smith and Koskinen for a third straight year.

Do teams that start off a season 11-3 tend to fire their GM's?

I'd like to know the precedence for this.
He won't be fired... I"m expecting us to win our next 5 games and a contract extension for him and Nicholson.

He is a Hall of Famer with several cup rings. We are 11 - 3.

Perfect storm.

It happens, but the GM has to be a complete asshole for it to happen.

Ken Holland, by all reports is a nice guy. All kidding aside, Id say less than 1% chance he’s going anywhere soon. (Nor should he in my opinion). He’s made some improvements, yes the window is tightening, I still have hope for the post season and years to come.

We are 11-4. 6-4 in our last 10. Just minor correction to a few earlier posts.

So there were four issues going into the offseason imo:

Goaltending needed an upgrade - Holland did nothing

Need of a top 6 W - Hyman so far so good this season

Lack of depth with McDavid/Drai off the ice:

Oilers at 5v5 with one/both of McDrai on the ice: 24 GF 15 GA

Oilers at 5v5 without either McDrai on the ice: 10GF 21GA

Top 4 LHD: Duncan Keith looks old and slow.

Not fixing the goaltending is egregious, and how many kicks at the can does he get to bring in bottom 6 players who end up just completely flopping once they get here?

11 wins 4 losses………..

Dri is 2 points per game and Connor has scored in every game………o_O

Play a team that seems to have your number………..:skeptic:

………@Spawn you should change your name to Chicken little:thumbu:

We need to stop using regular season as barometer for Holland/Tipp & the team in general (including drai/mcd). We've shown many times that we can dominate the regulars season by way of the PP and McDrai but there are still lots of holes on this team that were basically the same holes we had in playoffs. This whole year should be about getting us ready for playoffs, not how well we do in regular season, although it super fun to watch.

Do I think this thread is too soon and reactionary? Yes.

Was the Holland victory lap on this board too soon and reactionary? Yes.

However, there is LOTS of time and the framework for a stanley cup team is still here IMO.

Being embarrassed by the same team that embarrassed us in the playoffs last year is a stark reminder that this team is no closer to winning in the playoffs than in either of the prior two seasons.

Our game plan is pray McDavid and Drai put up multiple points in a game. That doesn’t cut it when you consistently have the second best goalie and when those two are off the ice the team gets buried.

It sounds like you think coaching has had no impact on this at all.

How does he bring in analytics darlings and the bottom 6 gets worse?

The coach always changes before the GM. He made a mistake in sticking with the coach that only ever made the Conference Finals because Mike Smith had a Smythe worthy playoff performance.

The good/bad is that before anything can truly be confirmed/fixed we got to wait to see if we make the playoffs again only to be beat in the first round again.

While imo it seems likely our playoffs will be short and disappointing even I can't suggest actually firing Tippett or Holland after an 11-4 start.

But hot damn these guys better not get an extention either no matter how well the regular season may go.
