Maybe this is a dumb question but why don’t soccer players try for deflections like hockey players do? That shot by the England guy, everyone let go by and it went wide, but someone could’ve tried to deflect on net and I feel like I don’t see that often?

Pele used to do that. He would also pass the ball off of an opponent's shin. He is the only soccer player that I can recall who made that work multiple times.

This whole tourney has been one great deflection fest. The key though is you let your opponent deflect instead. You draw a man into the box, and swoosh, when he tries to clear the ball: mission accomplished. It's called an "own goal".
