Lemieux.

81 points in 46 games is utterly ridiculous right now. He just might have 100+ in 56 games.

Needs 19 or more in 10 games to do it.

Only guy I can think of in my lifetime who I could legitimately see doing that.

Best since peak Ovechkin, a notch above Crosby far below Jagr. Like every other player no case against the big 4. Seeing him win this poll against Jagr tells me everything I need to know about the state of this forum.

Huge McDavid fan and he’s on the right track so far, but you’re spot on with every point in this post.

If Connor does this again next season I’ll say he’s past ovi for peak, but not yet. And definitely not past jagr yet

Relevant thread:

Best "half seasons"

Snippet from 3rd post here:
[Last Name, Year, GP, G, A, P, P/GP]
Some of the best to start the season:

Lemieux 1996 41 45 64 109 2.66
Jagr 1996 42 36 51 87 2.07
Francis 1996 41 20 57 77 1.88
Lemieux 1997 41 29 45 74 1.80
Jagr 2000 41 33 40 73 1.78
Lemieux 2001 43 35 41 76 1.77
Gretzky 1994 41 16 54 70 1.71
Ovechkin 2010 52 42 46 88 1.69
Lemieux 2003 41 20 48 68 1.66
Crosby 2007 41 23 45 68 1.66
Jagr 1997 44 41 31 72 1.64
Jagr 1999 52 27 58 85 1.63
Crosby 2011 41 32 34 66 1.61
Kovalchuk 2006 41 34 32 66 1.61
Alfredsson 2006 44 32 38 70 1.59
Neely 1994 44 50 20 70 1.59
Lindros 1995 41 25 40 65 1.59
Lindros 1996 41 29 35 64 1.56
Jagr 2006 42 27 38 65 1.55
Yzerman 1994 41 19 43 62 1.51
Oates 1994 43 19 45 64 1.49
Lindros 1997 41 22 39 61 1.49
Jagr 1995 41 28 33 61 1.49
Forsberg 2006 41 15 46 61 1.49
Selanne 1999 54 34 45 79 1.46

For reference McDavid's line this year would be:
McDavid 2021 46 28 53 81 1.76

Mind you, none of these numbers are adjusted for era, but the league-wide goals per game is at 2.93 this year, compare to 3.14 in 1996 and 2.75 in 2000.

All considered, I'd say offensively he's in the same tier as peak Jagr as of right now. Still has time in his career to pass him too!

Not better than peak Jagr or OV. McDavid is the best player in the world and he'd win the ross in any division or full season (assuming health). However, in a full season he's never even finished top 5 in goals. Peak Jagr and OV were right at the top in goals and pts (without having another hart winner to share the ice with on the PP). If McDavid finishes top 5 in goals and pts in a full season then we'll see.

While normally I’d agree with the full season argument, I don’t it’s relevant given that we will have had three shortened seasons in a row after next season. A lot of players at their peak would be punished using such a standard in these unprecedented times.
If he finishes top 5 in goals and laps he field in the Art Ross this year then it’s absolutely in the ballpark with Jagr and Ovechkin. Full season or not.

Imagine Jagr playing with the open ice that's afforded to players today.

Imagine McDavid playing with Lemieux, Francis, Nedved, Sandstrom, Zubov, Naslund, Joey Mullen, Straka, Lang, Robitaille, Murphy, Cullen, Stevens, Samuelsson...

My response is not to downplay Jagr's obvious talent but rather to point out that your argument is very short-sighted in only acknowledging an advantage that today's era has over the 1990s and not considering the obvious advantage that Jagr would have over McDavid. A significant factor in Jagr's dominance in his era was because he did have the size, strength and balance to overcome the playing style of that era presented.
