It's a totally dumb maneuver made by totally clueless people.

FIFA had been bundling all the World Cup events (like a dozen of them) into one TV package sold to each country for decades; and then earmarking the revenue they received as prize money to all those tournaments in a totally gender biased way.

Facing the accurate claims of that gender bias, they decided to split the women's rights off and sell those. Of course TV networks are balking. They're now being asked to pay A LOT MORE for the same amount of content as before.

FIFA needed to keep the Men's and Women's TV rights bundled together, but just fix their earmarks.

"You can have the Men's WC rights for X dollars; the women's for X dollars, but you have to buy both and commit to both, and we'll throw in the other tourneys for free."

They will pay the price for the men's tourney, just like they always have. You just have to add stipulations that the networks showing the men's WC have to show X percent of the women on the same channel, not ignore the tourney are relegate it to their version of TruTV.

I agree. It needed to remain bundled together with the stipulations for a certain amount of airtime.

Women’s 2015 final has the record.
Not when you factor in streaming viewers.

Needles to say, regardless, it took the US women's team playing in the final while being held in North America to even put one entry here.

I should also point out that this is from 2021, so none of the 2022 World Cup ratings are included.

The women's world cup no doubt does well for itself, but the narrative that it's more successful stateside than the men's event quite simply has no basis in reality.

Why is the term "fair" used in a business negotiation?

"We will offer you $10,000,000 for this product."

"That's not fair!"

"Oh, our deepest apologies, is $12,000,000 fair? Perhaps you tell us what is "fair" and we'll pay it.|"

So they're gonna hold the men's games hostage because they don't like what the market said the value of the women's games are?
You may suggest this to Infantino, since he never came up himself with that negociation tactic.

I'm a little surprised that FIFA got caught off guard here.

The broadcast partners have been collecting ad revenue for the women's world cup for some time, they will have a good understanding of what the value of the product is.

I'm assuming this is pretty typical FIFA greed. They assumed they could decouple the women's event from the men's event and see a massive windfall, but then found that the networks had a firm number in place already because they already know what type of revenue they will generate.

Masking greed with a social cause is the new norm. Gone are the days when they would have asked the women to show a bit more skin to get interest.
