Alexander Ovechkin just recorded his 500th point against NYR. I watched the game and didn't notice any stats mentioned on the fastest players to reach that point total. Surely Ovy can't touch Gretzky and Lemieux on this but other than that he's got to be very high on the list. Who make the top 10 and with how many games?

Sidney Crosby is approaching his #500, too, and by his current pace might just crack it at the end of this regular season and is likely to finish within a couple games with Ovy.

Oh and while we are at it, would be interesting to see the respective lists on 600th, ..., 1000th point (while it's immature with respect to the aforementioned young duo). Is there a website that has this info?

This shows the players who had 500 points after their first five seasons: http://www.hockey-reference.com/pp/tiny.cgi?id=rYKJM

It doesn't specify which game they got #500 in, but we can still tell that Gretzky, Lemieux, Bossy, Stastny and Kurri all got there faster, while Trottier and Hawerchuk likely did as well.

Plus there's players who didn't hit in until their 6th season, but still did it in less games than Ovechkin. Lindros, Yzerman and Nilsson are examples.

This is about as close as H-R's powerplay stat machine can get you.

Here is the list of NHL players that reached 500 points within their first 5 seasons.
http://www.hockey-reference.com/pp/...comp=gt&c4val=&order_by=points&order_by_asc=Y

Gretzky, Lemieux, Stastny, Bossy, Hawerchuk, Trottier, Savard, Kurri, Ovechkin.

Expanding the criteria to first 6 seasons add quite a few more players. One that stands out is Lindros who did manage to get to 500 points quicker than Ovechkin but had a lockout shortened season as well as injuries in his first 5 seasons thus bumping him back to his 6th.

500 in five? –
Alex Ovechkin enters his 373rd career game with 497 points and is on the verge of becoming the first active player and
ninth player in NHL history to record 500 points in his first five seasons (joining Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Peter Stastny, Mike
Bossy, Dale Hawerchuk, Bryan Trottier, Denis Savard and Jari Kurri). He would become the fastest player to reach 500 points in terms
of games since Eric Lindros (352nd game, 2/28/98).

Gretzky also reached 1000 points on his 424th game. It was Dec 19, 1984. Even more remarkably, his next 1000 (remember, he's the only one to ever reach 2000) came only 433 games later on Oct 26, 1990. He was 29 years old. That span of 433 games is less than it has taken anyone else to reach 1000 even (thus he scored his 2nd 1000 pts in fewer games than anyone else scored their 1st.)

Add in the HOF-worthy career stats'-worth separation between him and 2nd all-time (points), and that's pretty ridiculous.

Gretzky's dominance is almost.....obnoxious. I mean, honestly....if I didn't know for a fact the man existed, I'd think all his accomplishments were made up, haha.

But congrats to AO!

I hope Crosby can sneak in and make it by the end of this season :)

Does anyone know in how much games did Gretzky get his "fastest" 1000 points? I'm pretty sure it will be under 400 games...

Crosby will get to 500. He is the 6th fastest player to get to 400 points in NHL history did it before Ovie as well

So were the greatest offensive players ever from the 80's or just the worst defense/goalies?

A bit of both, IMO. Obviously wide open hockey and smaller goaltending equipment contributed to the point totals, but its not like everyone from the 80's is ahead of Ovechkin on these lists. Its still mostly the elite players, and guys like Gretzky and Lemieux were obviously very good even in the 90's, when all this started to change.

Great players are just great players, regardless of when they played.

Take the top half of the NHL rosters now and then fill them out with nothing but AHL players. Then remove all starters and have the backups take over along with an AHL backup. That's pretty much the top to bottom depth/effectiveness back then. The emphasis on everyone being able to skate, move the puck, and know the systems have really closed the gaps between the skill guys and the muckers. Not to mention the coaching for goalies.

Wow, Lindros did it in just 352 games. We're already talking about ovechkin as a HHOFer and better than Dickie Moore.... do we underestimate Lindros?

interesting thought. maybe the thing to take into account is that lindros only had one full season in those years. yeah, he won the hart and tied for league lead in the points that year, so there's no denying his dominance. but he also missed on average 1/5 of every season in the years that he got those first 500 points, which i think detracts from his all-time status.

Dec 19, 1984 was the day I was born. Interesting.

Crosby

Sidney Crosby just scored his 500th point in 369 games. Only Gretzky 234, Lemieux 287, Stastny 322, Bossy 349, Lindros 352, Kurri 356 and Trottier 361 did it faster.

NO!!!!!!!!!! alright they were amazing players and not doubt one of the greatest to lace up, but big part to do is salary cap, if no salary cap today, it'd be crosby malkin, ovi, kopitar, iginala, and brodeur, all on one team kinda like edmonton in 80's (gretzky mersseir, kurri, furh, and few oother greats) with s. cap u'll never have dynasty teeams or padded stats like that again

With respect to personal stats, the salary cap is completely irrelevant. We may never see another dynasty in part due to it (but lets remember, we went 15 years without one when there was no cap from 1991-2005), but the impact on individuals is negligible.

This is because, contrary to commonly held belief, linemates have very little effect on the production of the truly elite players. Gretzky may not have been getting 200 points without Kurri, but he'd have still been getting around 180 with average linemates. Notice how Ovechkin's production has remained steady throughout his career, even though he now has talented players like Backstrom and Semin to play with, whereas he was playing with scrubs his first year or two. The best of the best will put up points regardless of who they are playing with.
