DeAngelo never even did anything wrong. People just don't like his political views which is why they came for his head.

(Obviously TDA had some issues in the OHL, I was talking about this year / recent times)

DeAngelo is a perfect example of why character matters.

In Sarnia, he was suspended for verbally abusing an official. Hey, just a kid right? Kids can make mistakes, even if hundreds of them get through the OHL without ever being suspended for abuse of official.

Ok, so that same season he gets hit with a second suspension, this time for a slur directed at a teammate. Cancel culture dictates that this is the end of the line for him, right?

Well, not really. Actually he was pretty much just given a free pass on character and drafted in the first round regardless of multiple character-related suspensions.

OK, so he made some mistakes as a kid. No big deal! Now he’s all grown up and ready to move on, as an adult.

Welllll… as soon as he stops getting healthy-scratched and shuffled around in trades, and starts developing an actual career for himself, the character issues surface again.

It wasn’t just challenging a fan to a fight.
It wasn’t just questioning the seriousness of the pandemic as a guy who represents NYC.
It wasn’t just getting benched for another abuse-of-official incident.
It wasn’t just the “rumor” of friction with his only black teammate.
It wasn’t just getting in a physical fight with his own goalie.

It was all of those things together.

He got pass after pass after pass for character failures all along the spectrum of misbehavior. The Rangers told him point-blank that he would be waived if he couldn’t get his act together. And nothing changed. So they waived him. And nobody took him for free. What did all those free passes amount to? The same terrible person doing the same terrible things he had always done, because he hasn’t grown a bit since he was a teenager. His lack of accountability did nothing for him, and nothing for his teams. It just spread the problem around.

And somehow, here we are 7 years after this all began, with multiple comments in this thread to the effect of “TDA didn’t even do anything… people just didn’t like his politics!”

THAT is why it’s hard to take the pushback seriously.

So close and yet so, so far.

"Some guy got away with killing someone in a car while drunk a couple decades ago so I don't think there should be any consequences for tormenting disabled kids or sex crimes."

Some folks are becoming radicalized, anyway. Or they always were degenerates and just have a platform now.

It's not about "getting away with it."
Stop being so f***ing judgmental.
