Can he though? I thought you had to be 20 (or turning that year) for the AHL, is there a foreigner rule I am unaware of that let's underage guys play?

I believe it's a CHL specific problem, as Euros have joined AHL teams as 18 year olds throughout the year. Jiricek, Nemec, Kulich and even Lambert are last year examples.

Not like whatever the deal was with Patrik Stefan in the IHL back in the day.

It was pretty crazy, Robert Dome played in the IHL at 16. In the mid-90's, the IHL thought they could compete with the NHL so they probably had more lax rules with age in order to attract more talent. Almost like the USFL in the 80s being an option for players who wanted to leave college early since the NFL wasn't an option.

In that CBA, a European player had to be drafted first before coming into the NHL. So the IHL ended up being a decent paying option for some Europeans to play before going to the NHL.

If only for the walk through memory lane:

1991-92: Dmitri Kvartalnov (25)
1992-93: Mikhail Shtalenkov (28), Igor Chibarev (24)
1993-94: Radek Bonk (17)
1994-95: Petr Sykora (17), Vladimir Tsyplakov (24)
1995-96: Ruslan Salei (20), Konstantin Shafronov (27)
1996-97: Sergei Samsonov (18), Robert Dome (16 when he started in 1995), Sergei Yerkovich (22)
1997-98: Andrei Bashkirov (27), Rastislav Pavlikovsky (20)
1998-99: Patrik Stefan (17), Mikko Kuparinen (21)

Another fun rabbit hole might be established NHLers who briefly played in the IHL during contract disputes. Curtis Joseph, Sean Burke, Nikolai Khabibulin, and Peter Bondra off the top of my head.

I was saying what's he's good enough to play, not could he literally play in the AHL now if he wanted. You can't play AHL before going through the draft at least once.

As far as I understand you can sign a contract with an AHL club as a FA if you're 18 or older. Of course it's not about Demidov because he won't be a free agent.

Demidov is obviously KHL ready. Given the league is going to go hard on the cap circumventors next season, there is a chance SKA won't have any other choice but play Demidov. They don't have a lot of space under the cap, and Demidov's salary doesn't count against the cap.

This entire dynamic is so bizarre to me.

He can help you win and doesn’t hurt your cap, but you keep him down out of spite.

I don’t get it…

doesn't look small at all. bedard is small, demidov is not.
Either the 5'11 listing is inaccurate or he's got Datsyuk arms that are long relative to his height. Whenever I watch highlights he seems pretty rangy.

Demidov looks like king kong in comparison
He is not tall. maybe 5-10/11 but he seems to have a sturdy lower body. I think demidov and Arytom go 2-3. and then after that. 10-11 guys are all in the mix, Silynev, dickson. Parek, Byuim, cotton lindstrom, eiserman, ignlia, heleius and yachamuck. my tiers are 1, 2-3, 4-13. sorry about the spelling

Has anyone ever drafted from the MHL, projected to go this high?
how many in total; players drafted from the MHL

7 games at professional level, 0+0

He basically didn't have any TOI in those games, like Michkov for SKA. Funny shit, some of SKA-1946 players played some games for the main team but not Demidov (he had twice PPG than any of his teammates in the regular). SKA wasn't obviously intended to give him any pro time as a punishment for him not resigning with the team, not sure about now, though.

I don't have examples on hand, but many guys in the 1st round from Russia didn't have much results or playing time in KHL , just like Demidov

Better than building whatever the Habs are…
Not sure if the other guy's take was a jab since the Leafs are a pretty good team even if they choke in the playoffs...
We are in year 2 of a rebuild, what we are now is irrelevant 25-26 is when we need to judge this team.

He looks closer to 6'0 to me but a sturdy lower body? No way, his lower body needs a lot of improvement as he's too skinny and lacks strength in a major way. That's why I think he can be so good in 5 years when he physically matures he's going to rule the NHL.
