Staal has had surgery to repair a core muscle injury sustained during off-season training.

“Eric notified us of the injury late last week, and flew to Raleigh and then Philadelphia to be evaluated,” said Francis. “By having this procedure now, Dr. Meyers believes Eric will be able to return to action for training camp and be at full health for the start of the regular season.”

He's supposed to be good to go by the start of the season though. Already the injury bug is a biting!

My sources have delivered pictures of which "core muscle" Eric injured...

Built in excuse for slow start like GP said.

Edit, sorry, meant like JaquesStrappe said.

This injury.

“By having this procedure now, Dr. Meyers believes Eric will be able to return to action for training camp and be at full health for the start of the regular season.

Last years offseason injury (MCL)

Surgery will not be required to repair the ligament, and Staal’s rehabilitation should last three months. It is expected that he will be healthy and ready to play to start the 2013-14 season.

:sarcasm:

Ugh. I can see the excuses being built up as we speak (or type). Truly bad luck though. Sucks.

And if you all hadn't chased FDP away we would have known about it a few days ago.

Anyone familiar with these types of injuries?

Sports Hernia?

Could be, but usually they just say "hernia surgery" if that's what it is. Similarly, they usually just go ahead and identify back issues by name.

The fact that they decided to use the vague "core muscle" label suggests to me that it's something relatively obscure in the abdominal area. There are a bunch of specific muscles in your belly and sides that are usually not mentioned by name.

I assume he hurt a core muscle trying to bench press 400lbs in response to one of Pete's tweets.

Why wouldn't you say something vague about his return timetable since you didn't specify the injury to begin with? All you have to do is say that he may not be ready for opening night, and when he is, he's the conquering hero/leader etc. Seems like PR 101 to me, unless they think his lineup status could effect opening night ticket sales?

I'd guess that they are in the mindset of trying to sell season tickets, and to that end saying your franchise player (not to mention best overall player) is out for an indefinite amount of time could hurt that campaign.

It is a sports hernia. Per the doctor that did the surgery.

William C. Meyers, MD has dedicated 25 years to pioneering the diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and prevention of core muscle injuries, formerly known as athletic pubalgia or sports hernia.

I don't really think it's fair to call it indefinite. The press release said he is expected to be ready to go by training camp and will be at full health by the start of the season so there is a defined timeframe for it.

He's responding to me I think. I was saying why give that timeline if not 100% necessary even if they have one.
